Vanishing chainring bolts

Does anyone else lose chainring bolts?

Every so often I will lose one, frequently enough to think it's an issue.

I use loctite, gradually tighten them in an alternate pattern, make sure they're tight, check after the first ride and subsequent ones for a few more. And then lose one.

Tried alloy and steel chainring bolts (don't want the cost of losing Ti ones), various cranks rings and guards, different bikes and different uses.

I have a pile of double ring spares, but I generally need single ring ones.

No lost bolts in 40 years.

Probably one every couple of years so not quite a consumable but expected them to stay put until chainrings get replaced.

Did learn a while ago that light weight alloy ones didn't last on the single speed.

By using loctite you are “locking” the bolt and “nut” in place. Then when you revisit them and tighten you’re breaking the loctite bond. The loctite isn’t then doing anything.

The best chainring bolts are Stronglight. I’ve never lost one, never used loctite on them either.

Maybe two or three in thirty years.

I do like those Hope rings where the thread is on the ring though, you only need half a bolt as it were. Half a bolt, half a set? Just a bolt, no but? You know what I mean

I has one chainring that did it. No idea why, sharp edges perhaps. Or hole ever so slightly to small so you are catching the fillet between flange of the nut portion preventing the flange flats engaging.

The opposite. I keep finding unopened little bags of the things I must've added to orders to get free postage.
