Buy several planet x bike bags an a heap of lagging.
Put bike in bike bag and stack into van.
The square shape means they take up less space and you can get more in.
Alternatively - bunji to the side
I use webbing straps - 3 in all, which may be overkill, but I am talking about a tandem (usually). Don't bungy cords allow for an unwelcome amount of rattle n roll?

That's the most inconvenient use of a bike van that I've ever heard of.
Put bike(s) in van, lash to something, pad/cardboard between bikes as necessary, drive/ride.

Not in my experience, unless they're too long

bungees and pipe lagging
Load straps and careful loading to make sure stanchions don't get scratched.......bikes are for riding so don't worry about the paintwork. I got some stick on large patches meant for garage walls from Aldi to stop your car doors being marked really cheap, stuck them on the sides of the van and roof in strategic positions to prevent annoying metal on metal noises ie lock on bar ends.

Ratchet straps over bungees for me, no movement.
Bungees are fine with tension on them.
Does your van have any tie points or is it lined with no mountings?
Few eye bolts on the bulkhead and some picture rings with self tappers to the ply have me plenty of options.
I fitted some brackets in mine to give a range of bungee points.

+ 1 for bungees to the side. I also keep a couple of old towels and a couple of manky old sun lounger cushions. The cushions getup between bikes so they don't get tangled up in each other's spokes/pedals etc and then the towels get wrapped round the stanchions when I remember. But generally the towels are used for getting the worst of the mud off myself so I get out of soggy cycle gear for the drive home
