This might sound like a daft question, but I have an SP PD-8 hub that I just use for bikepacking, but was planning on just leaving the wheel on all the time. What I want to know is whether it is ok to use it without the connectors mounted and the hub not charging anything?

Yeah. You can short out the contacts for some resistance

Sorry, but can you elaborate on what you mean.

Are you saying that I should not use it without it wired up and being used to charge something?

It's fine, no different to having a device connected and the device (light or charger) turned off.

Won't the terminals will have a pretty high voltage across them if no load is attached? Fine so long as nothing touches them...
