[Closed] Using a single speed rear hub as a fat bike front

As per the title.

I've got a fat bike fork and am hoping to build up a cheap fat front. However I may not use it long term. I could make use of a single speed wheel though so can I build up a front wheel using a rear single speed hub? Or are the disc positions different.

Thinking of getting the Novatec D256SBT. I appreciate it might not have as wide flanges as a dedicated fat bike hub but I'm not going mega fat. More Plus.

Disc position will depend upon the fork, to use a traditional MTB 135mm rear hub on the front you need the fork to be Rear Disc Spaced.

If the fork is Front Disc Spaced, I think you will need an adaptor like https://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/frames-forks-c6/frame-fork-spares-c152/fat-fork-disc-adaptor-p11825/s33072

If you need it, there were some fat rims at PX, ~£40 each recently IIRC.

Thanks. Its an On-One Fatty fork so presummably front disc spaced.

I'll probably just get a cheap fat front hub like this.

Thanks for the PX rim suggestion too. I'll have a look.

It may be worth checking the axle size as well, normally 135mm front disc spaced hubs are 9mm axles, as opposed to 10mm axles for 135mm rear disc spacing

I did measure that. The fork appears to be 10mm. Maybe a hair less given the paint.

Thanks.

I'd check...

[edit] pretty sure they're RDS.

As above, the On One forks are RDS, I have the carbon one on my Wazoo.

Depending on where you are you could pick up my on one fatty front wheel with drilled rim. Replaced it with hope/DT Swiss. Ah just noticed you're going plus not full fat, as you were.

I was but now I noticed Planet X have the complete front fat wheel for £60. So I might just go for that.

Planet X are bloody useless. I asked a question to double check that this will work with my 'STEEL' On-One Fatty fork and they asked me 3 times if I have a steel or carbon fork. They also helpfully told me its a front wheel. Great.

Now they're not replying as they're closed for the day. Its 4pm.

Why not just put some actual details up on the listing and then we won't have to do this stupid dance.

Anyway thinking about pulling the trigger on this. I believe its the same wheel as came with the Fatty anyway. I'd want the QR option. Anyone think this may not be correct?

to be fair they're recruiting right now for someone to sort the details on their web listing out for them.

I don't think it will as they had that wheel on their bike with a Bluto and Blutos weren't RDS. I think you can space an RDS wheel to fit in a non RDS fork but not the other way round.
Though this is just my memory from a few years ago so I could be wrong.

Thanks @Akira. So whats the easiest option? Build a new wheel using a rear hub?

Got to say I don't really understand rear and front spacing. I measured my Singular Swift and both front and rear appear to be dead one 14mm from outer face of the disc to inner face of the caliper mount (IS mount).

I also put my rear wheel in the fatty forks. Also measured 14mm.

Found something a bit more helpful.
https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/disc-brake-mount-widths-an-onone-fatty-carbon-fork/

So I'm probably best going back to my original option of using a rear hub.

I guess I'll see what Planet X say when they get back to me.

That or just switch to my original plan of going 29+.

Unless you can track down a 135mm RDS front hub, hope used to do one but think they're all FDS now. Cheeky eBay search might be worth a try, maybe a Surly hub.

This is the response I've had from PX (verbatim):

These are the rim with the holes on the inside

The hub should be 135mm spacing on the qr

This would be suitable for the steel fork ( not carbon )

So it looks like it'll work.

Steel and carbon fatty fork were the same spacing 3 years ago. Maybe they've changed the spec though

I’m running a FDS wheel on my lads RDS carbon On-One fork, I just milled some off the calliper mount.

I got the wheel. But they sent me a 15mm axle rather than a QR. D'oh. They're just investigating if they have a QR in stock to send me.

They've collected the wheel. Don't have a QR one in stock. However I also received an email this morning to say they're sending me out the correct adaptor. Slight problem being that they're sending it to my old address (currently a vacant building) and as mentioned they've already collected the wheel.

Communication in that company must be non-existant.

I thought he'd left.

I'm going to put the fat front plans on hold for a while. So no worries.
