but so far being unsuccessful do I have to do anything to the Garmin besides turn it on and connect to my Mac
What are you doing? Saving the file to your mac then copy and pasting into the 'new' folder on your 800?
cannot open new folder on my iMac thats the problem!
Save course file and put it in the "new" folder on your Garmin. The bit I never knew and was always missing is that it needs to go in this "new" folder rather than "courses".
Edit: just drag the course file in to the folder, no need to look at it
Save file to a folder on your Mac
Plug in Garmin
Open a Finder window for the Garmin and for the location of the file.
Drag file from Mac to "New Files" folder on the Garmin
Unmount Garmin
Reboot Garmin
