My hardtail is a 4 year old Boardman 29er which is still excellent and been well looked after but a major gripe is the gears flying of and getting caught on a fast change. So I was wondering if it could be converted to a single sprocket at the front. And if cost might not be worth it on an old bike?
Thanks
You could go for a 1×whatever but if your chain is coming of the chainset it's probably down to a miss adjusted front mech. Get that sorted first and go from there.
As above - would be worth having a look at the front mech alignment. Although it depends what the cause is - I found with 2x10 in a Boardman pro fs I had that at Bike Park Wales / other fast andnrocky places you could drop a chain regardless.
1x can be done on most bikes - you might find you want to change the cassette at the same time to keep a reasonably low gear for uphills. Something like a 30t or 32t narrow wide up front with an 11-42 or 11-46 at the back could work.
How many speed is your bike at the back and what mech / shifters have you got?
Thanks good advice.
It’s 10 at the back and XT.
What sort of riding do you do?
If 10 speed xt then I don’t think you could run an 11-46 even with a goat link.
If you go for a sunrace 11-42 cassette and buy a goat link your current rear mech should be ok.
On the front if you’ve got a triple then just pick up a narrow wide single ring and put it in the middle position - I’d be going 30t on a 29er I think.
On a double front crank the spacing is less ideal but you might get away with it.
BCD is your key thing to check before buying - thats the spacing of the bolt holes for the chainring. 104 is the most common but there are all sorts of ‘standards’.
