[Closed] Tweed Valley riders - What tyres, now that normal service has resumed?

As above.

Recently bought a nice, big, silly 29er for having fun on. The stock tyres are Maxxis HR II front and a comedy Minion SS rear. Initially fine in the recent dry spell, but the weather has well and truly turned.

So, as we head into Autumn, what are you running on the Tweed Valley off-piste stuff (i.e. Golfie, Cademuir, Inners, Thornielee, Yair, etc.)? How much of a draggy compromise are you willing to tolerate in order to avoid death?

Minion 2.5 on front, DHR2 2.3 out back. Ground has a fair bit of loose rock in it, never seen the need for a shorty, plus plenty of roots.

Do have the option of a DH casing front, which is maxxgrip, downside is there is a 350g weight penalty, which is noticeable.

Would like to try a Maxxis assegai, buts its draggier than a draggy thing by all acoounts.

Just come on to ask a similar question myself albeit in a different riding area.

What is the 'best' tyre for mixed conditions with lots of slick roots? Der Baron?

Same tyres I use all year round on the Bronson, MM front, some kinda semi slick rear, currently a spesh slaughter.

DHF on the front, DHR2 on the rear. Shorty on the front if it gets really slippy. End of thread.

Minion DHF  WT 2.5 front and 2.3 HR2 rear has been good in the offpiste of Glentress, Inners and the Golfie. Then again I don´t race...

Don’t overthink it.

No danger of that here.

Consensus clearly emerging. Are most people running the 2.5 up front?

A mate was up there yesterday, still pretty dry, dhf / dhr should cover most bases.

Magic Mary front Hans Dampf rear.  Put them on in the autumn and they wear down quite nicely for the spring.

Magic Mary on the front with a DHRii on the back is a delightful combination.

I thought the Hans Dampf was rubbish in the mud, didn't clear well at all.

2.5 is considerably more aggressive/knobblier than its 2.3 sibling.

Not the same area but I’m planning Mary on the front and dhr2 on the back when Autumn actually arrives. It’s august though so we have a couple of months yet.....let’s hold onto the summer as long as we can!

I did run dhf 2.5 all through the winter just gone and it was fine as long as things didn’t get really sloppy  - same with the dhr2.

2.3 DHF/DHR on the big bike.

2.2 Ikon front, Nobby Nic rear on the fast bike, but that's mainly because that's what those had on them on Saturday.

Running a DHF WT 2.5 on front and an aggressor WT 2.5 on the rear, worked well in the wet mud on the off piste (zorro/fairy liquid/hush hus) at glentress yesterday. Usually use a mud spike like a shorty, but actually prefer the dhf- much better grip on the wet roots.
