[Closed] Turning a Fox Vanilla fork into a Fox Float fork
I know, the book says you can't do this because the spring will have scratched the inside of the stanchion and you wont get a good seal on the air chamber.
However, the legs are the same both sides, what's to stop me putting the damper in the other leg and making the old damper chamber into an air spring?
Anyone actually done this?
Can't see why it wouldn't work, but in the back of my mind I seem to remember earlier csu's not having a circlip retaining groove in the damping leg, though I may be confusing them with other forks.
I thought it would just be a case of air in and shortly after air out. I'm moving from Tallas to Float soon.
Cheers, I did check the bottom of the csu and there's the same groove and recess both sides.
Aren't the holes in the lowers for the damper and spring rods different sizes?
Nope, both use the same 10mm nut.
Interesting idea, I am thinking of changing my 150 TALAS to a 140 Van so would be good to know if there is a "way back" to air...
For the cost of the conversion, you can probably sell your vans and buy a 2nd hand float with the difference. I wouldn't personally change as I love the feel of the vanillas. Why do you want to change?
Basically, I've got two forks that are not 100%. So I've got csu from a vanilla but not the right spring rate. Easy answer is drop in the float parts and I can have any spring rate I want.
I'm sure I only paid £25 for a vanilla spring. We run the soft though the guide says medium
But I've got all the parts to try it. so I don't need to buy a spring.
I've done it the other way - I had floats with knackered internals and vanillas with knackered stanchions, so I made a hybrid - floatillas 🙂
I did swap the side the spring was in without issues
I recall someone asking on here some time ago and it was suggested that whle you can put vanilla internals into floats, you can't go the other way - the coatings on the vanillas is different?
It was several years ago when I did mine though - about 6 I think
I though Van CSU's weren't sealed and therefore might not work with Float.
The reverse isn't the case as it doesn't matter
The inside surface of the air leg on an air fork will be honed (much better surface) before being anodized to create an air seal .
The leg on a coil may work for a while but was never designed to run air
and will have a much rougher finish and not be anodized to the same standard .
