Nice.

I rode one at Laggan a couple of years ago, and have wanted one ever since, but for some reason bought a Whyte instead. I know, I know, entirely different kind of bike.

I'm not sure how much longer I can resist the pull.

What fork is that? Have you tried it with a 160?

I had a 2009dw which developed a crack on the weld at the bottom of the downtube after about 6 months use . . .

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ziplockk/4968670444/

The front frame was replaced with a 2010 version . . .

[img] [/img]

Which is different in the area of the crack . . .

Fingers crossed . . . great bike tho' . . .

Another 'proper' horst-link 5 Spot

The rear shock's been swapped for an RP23 since then, and the front fork was swapped for a Revelation, and now a Pike air. They are such brilliant bikes to ride - I was smitten after my first test ride up in Aviemore, and I still hate the thought of it dying and having to be replaced.

1996 Burner still going strong. She'd had new bushings mind, and is on her fourth pair of forks and third shock. I believe (having enjoyed Privateer) the term for an old frame with modern components is 'hot-rod'

re the cracking of 08 DW frames. I have seen two do this now in the same place-at the base of the seat tube, but Turner have changed the design in this area and added a gusset which has fixed this problem.

Nice bikes

cracked i frame at the downtube, 1 set of rocker arms and bent 1 rear triangle. Still have it now but never really ride it. Just ride hardtail all the time recently. I might get round to using the 5 again but will prob look at spendin some money lightening it up from its 32lb guise just now

Looking very old now but still going strong.

My 05 Spot avec Horst Link goodness.

Zedsdead, frame's now for sale - it's a large, and it'll be perfect for you.

I've just sold the CCDB that was on it, though, so at the moment it's got no shock at all on it.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thought DW link was introduced in 09? I'm curious to see what they changed to cure the cracking problem.

No problems with my first generation DW Spot. If I do get any issues I know I'll be sorted out, maybe with a 2011 frame 8)

No squeeks or creaks either.

Is that my chain stay?!

No, yours was a spare, I got a full back end and a spare stay off fleabay for £100 and built up another with a 08 raw front end from turner in the us, the spare stays were a garage wall ornament til I heard the cry of despair from your post so decided to share the love rather than keep it hidden away,
I've had the red one since feb 04 and she's still good to go, and when I pop my clogs she's coming with me 😆

The old one was just better. I broke it after 5 years at the taco weld on the seat tube and replaced it with the new one. A fine bike but they shortened the top tube a bit and it isn't as easy to manual. If I could buy a large old style front triangle, I would happily run the original again.

Cheers

Sanny

What have you put on instead of the coil?

The raw ones not built up anymore, I swapped the bits onto a pitch frame which uses a 200mm shock and that springs too short cos it's for a 190 shock, And having tried a spot in long and short travel guises I decided I prefer them more with shorter rockers and 130-140mm forks and a lighter build
The raw one is Insurance 😉

My old 5 Spot

[IMG] [/IMG]

and my "new" 5 Spot

[IMG] [/IMG]

I've fitted some Pushed travel plates to my latest Spot as I do prefer them with the 140mm forks. I had the DHX coil on my older one which was fantastic and I'm looking find one with a Ti spring again. I've yet to try the DW Link one for a long ride after having a very very brief test on one but I did like the initial feel so can't wait try it properly and see.

A slight hijack, had my flux dw rp23 "pushed" by push industries over here in the states, made a whole heap of difference, before the rebound was too fast and the propedal, even in spot 3 was not enough of a difference, but after "pushing" it the rebound speed is noticably different after each click, the pro pedal actually makes a difference too and the action is smoother, it was $159 and that included new du bushings and a full service, well worth the money

They are great bikes but I'm still trying to forgive mine for breaking my wrist 8 weeks ago. Mines a bit like triggers broom:

I got a large HL in Feb 2004 as a reward for mending a broken knee, great bike but I decided in 2008 that a large was too small so got an XL front 2008 triangle. I've also swapped the romic for a DHX and recently the rockers for 5.5 rockers.

So all I need is a rear end and I'll have a complete second frame which I could give to my brother (a friend bent his bike). So does anyone have a set of chain and seat stays?

problem with the 5 spot evolution is it's been driven by economics and not improved performance.

it's widely acknowledged that the Horst Link is still a 'better' platform than any of the less expensive more recent patents.

I like the looks of the older ones, but the new dw ones are growing on me
But with turners it's the all round package that swings it for me, the bushings are ace and the cs is superb, and the little things like the warranty and cs go with the frame not the owner, and even a 12yr old fubard frame has £500 trade in value off a new one.
