Sorry if this has been done before, but now that there are fair few of the DW link versions on the trails, which is the best, HL, FB or DW ?
horses for courses i think. Ride a HL and FB and couldn't really tell a difference, both buttery smooth. Friend has new DW link and swears by it although i dont think there will be much in it. Tyre clearance and mud clearance are worse in the DW link though
I have an HL one and I love it. Not ridden one of the others to compare tho'
Have ridden all 3 extensively - I own a HL and DW, and my regular riding buddy has just swapped his FB for a DW.
On MTBR I did quite a long write-up on how I thought each compared.....
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=476529
Conclusion unsurprisingly was that the DW outperformed both, and by enough of a margin to convince both me and my mate to upgrade....
I still enjoy riding the HL, esp after getting it resprayed, so although not as fun to ride, it's by no way a second-class bike....
ive ridden horst and now own tnt i couldnt tell the difference apparently the tnt has a stiffer rear end but i cant tell must be my crap skills lol not ridden a dw but i do think they look awful but it will be top of the list to try when i need a new one as the other two were so good
heihei...
What kind of condition did you send the bike to get resprayed in ? Fully stripped down with all bushes removed ?
Who did the respray and if you dont mind me asking how much was it. It looks great.
Are the 36's on the DW set to 140?
Lowey - I used windridge. I broke the frame down and removed rear triangle, bushes etc, and they chemically stripped the frame. Think was around £70. If I did it again, I'd leave the old bushes in, as they all needed cleaning up.
Si - no they are at full height. My original intention was to play around with the settings so I have the adaptors to take it down to 140mm and 150mm, but tbh I like the way it rides at 160mm. Before getting the 36's, I ran it with the Lyrics now on the yellow HL and played with various heights, so knew it would be good at 160mm, so not too surprised that's where it's stayed.
I've owned all 3 and the DW link is the best.
heihei
always nice to see your 5spots.
so, let me get this straight: you can leave bushings and zerks fittings in when you send for a respray?
Rubberduck - I've a dw flux having owned a hl flux. the dw climbs better and seems faster. but it's the geometry that sells these bikes to me rather than the suspension action. don't reckon you'd be disappointed with either.
rexated - I left the zirks in. on hl spots they are an interference fit so quite difficult to remove. i just had to scrape the paint away to clear it. i removed all the bushings but as a result there was powder coat on the bearing surfaces which took me ages to remove (sharp knife and needle file), so in hindsight i'd leave them in, and remove afterward to replace with new ones (i was replacing all the bushings anyway).
Is that Gisburn Mick?
cheers heihei - i think the 5pack is due a lick of paint 8)
I've no reason the change my HL, it doesn't have any faults that I am aware of!
I see you've played with the rocker links heihei - I remember reading over on the Turner forum, that the consensus was, that changing for the aftermarket longer rockers, actually ****ed up the ride, and people weren't getting any more travel than with the proper Turner rockers, as fitted to the 05 hl bikes?
I'm with you woodsman - got the chance to get a DW later in the year but gonna keep my old HL another year or two yet, just feels right.
I toyed with the 5.5 rocker idea but it seemed a lot a ****ing about for an extra 12mm travel, also on older spots there is a cable stop clash issue.
My HL 5 (5.5 Rockers)is off for paint at the moment, going bright orange. Still can decide if I want the rear end painted too.
tops5 - I only plan to change mine if it breaks, and then I would get it repaired and heat treated at any cost. After owning several other full sus bikes over a ten year period, I know I've finally found the one that suits me, great ride and it doesn't aggrevate my knee like the others that I owned.
it is indeed tops 5 😉
That white DW looks fantastic, and may even have enough standover for a short arse like me.
looks like these are going on my 'what to buy next list'
Chucky - and that's a large frame running 160mm forks!
Re: longer rockers - I originally got them when I had Pikes on, and agree, prefered the old ones so switched back. I then had the idea of trying with longer forks (in pics has Lyrics set at 160mm and currently has 150mm Marz Z1 Lights) and the bike is awesome. Handles pretty much the same as the old rockers with Pikes, but with the extra 1/2" or so of travel and sl higher bb.
I don't think DT ever waranteed the HL version with anything longer than 140mm forks, so no-one really tried them, but given how bomb-proof the frames seem to be, I can't see too many problems running 10-20mm longer.
I wasn't gonna post a pic of mine but what the hell

Ken - who did your new decals shown on your last post?
They're all good, sorry great bikes. Riden Hl - great, owned Fb - still great. Now have DW - fantastic!!
To be honest I only have the DW because some scroat nicked the Fb, didn't change because of any other reason.
The Dw is a different ride & imo pedals a bit better. I couldn't really tell a great difference between the Hl & Fb although I didn't ride them back to back. However I did get the Fb because of the time i spent on a Hl.
Bottom line_______ they're all great except the dw - Fantastic IMO!!
DW might be better than HL but I've still got my 2003 HL 5 Spot and see no reason to change it as I'm still the weakest link not the bike. Plus the HL and TNT bikes look much better than the DW ones.
Some nice looking 'spots up there.
Slight dilemma here,I'd love a new 5 spot, but already own an 06 RFX,that is built up quite heavy (38lbs),as a Alps/Whistler bike, and as such, hardly gets used for most of the year.I know I can get the weight down to 33lbs by changing the fork/wheels/tyres,and possibly shed a couple of lbs more by ditching the bashring/chain device & changing the dx 'full cage' pedals for 520's.
So,with the RFX down to say 31lbs,would that be perceived as being ok for 'all day' rides? Would there be a significant weight loss in using a dw link 5 Spot frame instead?
Oh,the significant weight loss to the wallet goes without saying...... 🙂
Gary_c - I used to have a 6-Pack which was built up to 32-33lbs, but still felt it was too much for an all-day bike. Not so much the weight, but just the general ride was more about play bike than distance. A DW Spot may not come in a huge amount lighter (mine is just under 30lbs) but to use the standard mtb cliche it rides lighter.
Gary,
I've an 05 6pack, that properly build up with coils either end comes in at 34lb. Still doable as an all dayer if your riding mates aren't whippets.
However, I've also had it built with 5.5 rockers, an RP3 and a rockshox air revelation and it came in at 28lb which i reckon is a fair weight for an all dayer.
I spent last night putting the coils back on though. sod the weight, it's more fun chunky.
heihei & rexated,thanks for your input,guys.
I'll give the RFX a chance, just remembered too, that its got a coil shock on atm, which weighs a ton!,so i'll pu the DHX air that it came with, back on,save a bit more weight.
(Goes off to get tool kit out)
had all 3 and love them all.
prefer the DW though but just because its newest!
Been watching this thread thinking 'Ooo they look nice' - Had a look in the LBS this morning and nearly came out with their '09 demo - will someone go into Bikescene and buy it to save me from divorce!!
Have had three 5 Spots (two TNT and one HL rear end) and now my DW Link Flux.
All are fantastic bikes. Depending on build,my Spots weighed between 28lbs and 32lbs...
My DW Flux is 27.26lbs with my normal tyres on but the previous owner had some bling cranks, carbon bars and XTR everything else and it was 25.25lbs.
The DW link has raised the performance of all Turner models up a notch - there are now plenty of people putting 6 inch forks on 5 Spots, or like me, running 100/120/140mm forks on Flux's.
The new Spot is the old RFX (we all know that Turners new RFX will take the place of the Highline) and the new Flux is the old Spot!
My DW Flux is every bit as capable as any of my three Spots were and due to its lighter weight and greater zippiness is a much better option for 99% of UK trail riding.
There's also currently a post on the Turner MTBR with a guy who's built up an 'AM Flux' with CCDB coil shock plus other bling. Dave Turner's replied on that post too and rates it...
In previous, 25.25lbs guise...
There's a frame on ebay that ends tonight, mind you I think the price has been bumped up, but I could be wrong of course......
coogan
that new bike is bloody edible, lovin the shock! i want one, as above, been watching this thread drooling!!credit card in my hand, web search begins, dangerous combination.....5 or flux or 5 or flux.......ohhhh
I have a HL flux and a TNT 5 Spot. 5 Spot goes off drops and plays around on long rocky descents, the Flux goes to races. The Flux is amazing, I really love that bike. It has almost rendered the 5 Spot redundant.
i'm no fan of the DW frame but toons is a winner 🙂
still waiting for the new RFX though ;(

I really wish Turner had done an 18 tho. The 17 was too short, and mine was a bit tall. Still had a lot of fun wit it. First ride was after picking it up from Sideways Tim and then driving to Scotland to meet some friends. Half way down the Caddon Bank descent I remember thinking bloody hell, this is some bike.
