i am going to go and try tubeless but maxis dont do a lust minion ๐
anyone use tubeless specific tyres?
2bliss Specilized Eskar's are pretty good IMO. Ran 25psi in the front and 30psi in the backt his weekend with no burping or loss of traction (OK it was a trail center, but I was still impressed).
Maxxis tyres seem to work well enough with sealent and stans strips. Just add a layer of electrical tape at a time under the stans strip untill they inflate without sealent, add sealent and pump upto 60psi, leave overnight, drop the pressure to 25-30 and they're ready.
personally i run tubless ready tyres - not full tubeless, they tend to be far lighter. best thing you'll change on your bike though. i went that way about 2 months back and i wont be running tubes again. unless i get a major flat while im out!

i have blown the tire off the rim in 2 rides at herts so i reckon i need a new front minion anyway so may as well try tubeless

Jedi, you can just use a normal tyre. IME Lust is crap, it seems to rip at the join between the sidewall and the bead. I get away with singleply 2.35 Minions upfront, that's for fast rocky riding and it's never been an issue, the tyre rips before it comes off the rim and whenever that's happened I'm sure it would have been a huge snakebite if I was using tubes. I'm not doing huge jumps though. On the rear I find I rip singleply quite a bit, I only use them for guiding when I'm not riding as fast and will put on doubleply's for winter fun. I always run around 30psi, any lower and I get a bit of burping. And you need plenty of sealant if you're using the non-UST tyres.
For your type of riding you'd probably be better with either a full UST or using double ply non-UST.
depends on manufacturer - we use a special design on the bead on UST/Tubeless ready tyres which is less prone to 'blowing off'. full tubless tyres a have an extra layer in the carcass that make them completely airtight and more repairable if the tyre gets damaged.
But now, the technology is good enough not to need that extra layer. hence TL ready tyres. the only disadvantage is that a TL ready tyre is generally less repairable. Most riders tend to go for TL ready cos they are a couple of hundred g lighter, and you have to be pretty unlucky to damage a TL ready tyre to the point where you cant fix it....
I use full UST tyres, bloody expensive though. Add a little stans liquid and they're excellent (once fitted).
The Specialized 2Bliss (geddit? ๐ ) ones aren't great, though - paper-thin sidewalls, you can see the liquid seeping through. That said they're light and roll well, which is nice for XC but probably not too much of an advantage for your riding, jedi!
The Lust ones work well IME, but I've not tried the tractor sized ones Doug's on about.

Tubeless ready as opposed to full UST means they have the same tighter beads, but a thinner carcass that is still a bit porous, so it will deflate unless you use sealant. UST can be run dry, but to be honest you should put some sealant in anyway to protect against thorn punctures and help seal against burping.
Maxxis don't do a LUST (only tubeless ready, needs sealant anyway) Minion, but normal single ply Minions are known to seal pretty well in a tubeless setup anyway when used with sealant. Or you could look at other tyres, I really like the Bontrager XR4 and Conti Rubber Queen, both in 2.2" (though both actually bigger than a 2.35" Maxxis).
Tony I've been running a Minion on front of the Session tubeless since before I was at yours last. A bit of Stans goo and all has been fine for me for the past few months.
You may need to inflate with a tube overnight first though to get it to seat properly.
Commented on your tweet, but basically (admitting here I know little about tubeless) I'd assume LUST would not have the sidewall strength for the Minion given the kind of use they get. I get the impression that moving to tubeless, sidewall strength becomes important as there's no tube inside to hold out against holes in just the sidewall.
But can get plain UST. Is that what they call tubeless ready? (Does that mean LUST can only be tubeless?). Edit: Ah, just seen the replies about this above.
Thinking of going tubeless myself. Got the rims but just running tubes at present. Though only had one flat in 2 years and I run around 30psi.
Is running non-UST tyres good in the long run, or just a quick fix if you don't have UST handy? Got a couple of standard Minion DHFs and a High Roller and could just reuse them but they're folding (single ply?).

Must depend on the tyre, my eskars weigh as much/more than the high rollers they replaced and the sidewalls feel pretty tough.
5am, single ply minmion?
Standard Maxxis hold up fine with donkey spunk in them, Ive tried LUST HR's but ripped the bead pretty quick, I use Bonty TLR most of the time- got some new style XR4s coming to try out for winter.
I'm using non tubless maxxis on a stans rim with sealant, they seem to work fine for me. Have a 2.35 single ply minion front at the moment and that has been no problem. Also used single ply highroller with no trouble.
I have had problems fitting old, worn out maxxis back to rims after they have been knocking around the garage for a while but I think everyone has that problem from what I can see.
Another Maxxis and sealant user. Not had the need for the tubeless or TLR tyres.

Aye, standard Maxxis standard tyres usually seal up easily, quite thick rubber after all. Specialized's 2bliss are very good though, easiest tyres I've ever fitted and seal instantly.
(incidentally, comments on 2bliss durability- they're not all the same, racy XC 2bliss are light and relatively delicate, Eskars are pretty solid since they're made for tougher use, Clutches are almost as tough as a dualply.)

Thought it best to check as everyone else was talking single ply.
I've been running a 2.5 Dual Ply with no problems, went up very easily too as had been on the bike a couple of months with tubes first. Looses almost no air either.
Don't forget to buy your tubeless valves too, I used the Mavic ones which were as easy as they could be on the Deemax.
I use the wirebead ones. Just find they go on easier and seem like they'll stay on better.

I just run normal tyres on Stans rims with Stans sealant - seems to work ok. Also works fine on normal rims, but seem more prone to burping than on Stans rims.
