Want to convert a bike from a triple to a double chainset.
Currently running: Shimano LX triple 22/32/44 with SLX shifters/front mech/9spd cassette.
Want to run: Shimano SLX double 24/38 with same SLX shifters/front mech/9spd cassette.
Will this work so long as I wind the limit screws in on the front mech?
The new SLX double says for 10speed chains only but I thought the inside widths were the same? Or does the outside width matter in this case.
yes just alter front mech to only have one click at shifter
I thought 10 speed was thinner chain so I cannot see why a 9 speed setup would not work with this BUT you may need to use a 10 speed chain which MAY wear faster.
Personally i ran 22 32 on mine[ big mountain only] as I found with other setups you were always switching the front shifter- thik it was 24 34 originally but not sure maybe a 36.
I was using a 10-speed triple crank on an otherwise 9-speed setup (chain, mechs, cassette). I wanted to try shorter cranks and it made more sense to buy 10 speed at the time.
Use your existing triple shifter, wind the front mech stops in to only use the first click. Replace the inner and middle chainrings to the size you want, check the new chainrings are the correct BCD.
The 10 speed SLX rings will work fine on with your 9 speed chain.
Other than that, job done
I had problems with the triple mech as it's the wrong size and shape to get reliable shifting, had to fit a double front mech too.
9 speed chain will work fine.
Thanks very much. Warnings noted on the triple mech but will give it a go first as it seemed to work fine with the one I have previously converted in this way.
Make sure its got clearance in the chain stays for different ring sizes. I'm looking at you, Mk1 Soul.
Did this with an Xt 9spd chain set and mech/ gear lever mated to 10 spd rear.
No problem once font limit screws were sorted
It is an older On One 456.
