So next weekend, beginning of August, planning on driving up to the White Peak for the first time and am wondering how easy it is to find a decent loop as a newbie to the area? Is stuff signposted? Or would I be better hooking up with a local or buying a map?

I'm still surprised it is nearer to me than Cannock, which I will be doing on the preceding Wednesday.

Cheers all.

Nothing is signposted, no specific bike trails but easy enough with a map and an idea of route

Jamie, if driving up specially from Peterborough, I would drive a few more miles up to Hope area - fantastic riding and lots of choice. Hope's about 35 - 40 mins from Matlock.

Saw this yesterday but didn't get chance to respond.

• The best riding in the White Peak is of the cheeky variety and hard to find, so tagging on with a local is the best way to ride the decent trails.
• Nothing is signposted! Apart from usual footpath/bridleway signs.
• The best riding is spread over a bigger area than the Dark Peak so its a bit harder to string decent trails together without resorting to roads.

Even though I live in the White Peak and think there's some great riding to be had, for a one-off trip I'd go with what the others have said and travel a little further to the Dark Peak. You're sure to find the decent trails and there's loads of routes online to follow. Why not book into a YHA, or camp and make a weekend of it?

@ muffin-man.

My sister lives in Sheffield, so if the Dark Peak is the best bet I will have to stay with her for the weekend rather than try and do it in a day, which was the appeal of the the White Peak, and drive back.

Sorted then! - explore the White Peak Saturday... drive to sisters and spend the night... and then do the Dark Peak trails on Sunday!

🙂
