I have a good policy through my gold NatWest card that offers better cover for belongings, cancelation, ski pack cover etc than most insurance. It also covers any delays/cancelations due to the ash cloud as it was taken out before April.

However mountain biking is an extra 50, which would normally be fine. The problem is that if I add the mtb it counts as an upgrade post April (and the ash cloud) and the policy will no longer cover delays due to the ash. That is a bit of a pain.

So is it possible for me to take out dogtag insurance for any medical, accident relating to mtb and use the NatWest for lost luggage, cancelation cover? Is there any issue doing this? Can you have 2 insurance policies?

cheers

there's usually a question on claim forms regarding whether or not you may have other policies that could cover the loss

I don't know for sure if you are allowed two policies to cover the same things but it makes sense not to be able to for Fraudulent reasons.

I would thinks if it is legal - which I don't think it is to have 2 policies which overlap, or ceratinly claim off both, then one insurance company with ask teh other to pay and I would expect it to get very messy no?

I was wondering about it being fraud, however I have away from home insurance ( a tag on to my home cover) for my belongs and mobile phone insurance. If it is the illegal to have overlaping policies then that would be as well?

I think you should be fine as long as you don't try and claim from both and they don't find out about each other... For car insurance then it's only claims that are shared between insurance companies (to combat fraud of multiple claims for the same thing), pretty sure they don't share info on policies.

Of course you can have 2 overlapping policies. It's only fraud if you claim for the same thing twice or make false declarions on the application form etc.

If you need to claim, you claim on the most appropriate one, and in the worst case the 2 insurance companies have to fight between themselves as to which will be liable for which payouts.

IANAL.

In case you change bank accounts - A&L offer free travel insurance with their current account. It used to cost another £10 pa to add mountain biking but now it's all included. A&L use Fortis Insurance.

Thanks for the comments, I had a quick scout about on the net and I came to the same answer as ATR. Clarkey, thanks for the heads up. I am going to stick with Natwest as it is a pre existing policy that has to cover the ash problems. So it might come in very handy depending on how long it goes on for. And as far a si can tell the policy will keep going until I cancel the Gold card.
