So my local woods had a motorbike race in them over the weekend, so some previously nice decents are now heavily rutted and loose as they were used as climbs. I plan to head up there and repair what I can easily, filling in ruts with the loose soil and so on. What tools do people recommend for this sort of work: I'm guessing a soil rake should be good for moving the mud but would a tarmac rake be better suited for moving large amounts of heavy wet clods?

Tarmac rake is good but as it is quite wide you may struggle to move a lot of heavy soil. Great for lighter soil. As above, a narrower head be better. For landscaping I tend to use a combination of a pick-mattock for loosening and moving heavy stuff and a tarmac rake for lighter stuff and final smoothing
can you buy these anywhere in the UK? Never seen one until I moved to Norway but it is a pretty standard tool here. They are the best for trail building. Spikey ends for digging up stuff, you can use the whole crescent to make big chops into the ground or just skim bits off the top, then they're great for dragging dirt about. Lightweight as well!

As much as I'd like a BTR trail tool, that's approximately ten times more than I wanted to spend. 🙂 Fiskers to a tough looking soil rake that is quite narrow, might get that instead of a cheap tarmac rake.

Having done just that recently, the best tool for the job is our home made mattock. Basically an old shovel blade, welded onto a steel tube at 90 degrees. Unbreakable and able to shift a load of earth in one pull. Failing that then one of the boughten tools as shown above
