1st off-road ride today for a few weeks and really shocked at the condition of the trails. Around here in Cambridge a lot of the trails stay in consistent condition most of the year, obviously changing during the seasons but consistent year to year. This year they have turned into churned up 3 lane motorways, obviously caused by a lot heavier footfall and the need to pass at a safe distance. The same seems to be true of our local open spaces. What is it like in your neck of the woods?

Frozen solid, but also dry and dusty.

Really not used to it. Still in winter mode!

Not sure, they’re under about a foot of snow.

Churned up to buggery in East Devon, but now frozen solid into razor sharp hoof, foot and tyre shaped ruts.
Thought I was going to rip a sidewall yesterday!

Back to normal service on Sunday, warmer weather and heavy rain forecast 😟

Just got back, and everything is frozen and feels like concrete. Before that though, all the trails had suffered from a lot of traffic.

Most of our local trails have been "improved" at some point over the 20 years we've lived here so are fairly robust, just slicker and slippery in the winter. You can go off piste in winter of you want to get stuck in mud but you don't need to.

Nature, and the extra footfall this last year, has seen some of the trails start to return to nature a bit, especially as quite a lot have been under water at least once in 2021.

Today they were either frozen solid like concrete, covered in a thin layer of ice and snow, or in a couple of spots were fine splashy mud. Snow Studs weren't really required but certainly helped instill confidence.
