Just recieved a custom frame, I knew it wouldn't come with an axle but was supplied with the drawings for the correct one from the builder so sourced what I thought would fit... it screws in but it's too long, now I need to track down a suitable one.
The frame is boost, sliding Paragon Machine Works (probably a copy) dropouts and the required axle is a PMW 4041 ( https://www.paragonmachineworks.com/pmw-m12-x-1-5-rear-spline-head-skewer-choose-length.html) Needs to be 170mm total length and 12mm thread length.
I tried to fit a Brand X 148/180/20/M12*P1.5 and it's obviously too long, the threads stick out and there's a 3mm gap on the other side.
Fitted a 163mm from another (boost) bike and it works but obviously a bit short on the threads.
If I go for a Brand X 142/170/17/M12*P1.5 will it fit despite saying 142 instead of 148mm?
I'd say so, Nukeproof scout has a similar issue, its boost but uses an axle usually found on a 142mm frame.
Oneup axles have spacers to tailor the fit, the threaded section looks to be about 20mm so could be trimmed or just leave the 2mm sticking out.
Ok, that's reassuring, I guess hub spacing is irrelevant as long as the axle fits and the threads are the correct length.
Just fit a washer with the one you have. This is what the Robert axle project do for odd lengths.
Have you tried Ali express. I’ve just had some gear from the Ztto Official store including an axle for my Ti SS after I rounded the original, I think it was made of cheese!!!. They have a decent selection of axles. Delivery is quicker than a lot of UK/European sites.
MT Zoom also have a decent range.
The 170 BrandX sounds about right though, given that the 180 was too long.
Not sure a washer will work, will need to be 3mm and the other side will still catch on branches.
I did look at Mt Zoom but nothing suitable, ended up ordering the BX non boost 170mm, will try it tonight.
And it fits perfectly, flush on the threaded end like it was made for it.
Now I just need some m5 X 35mm screws for the chain tensioner side of things.
