[Closed] Track pump Vs Foot pump?

Never had a track pump, do I need one?

Always used mini pump when out on trails and a car style foot pump in the shed. Previously been only on schrader valves but now using presta and tubeless. Can use a presta adaptor on the foot pump or even fit a dual head so I can still use it on the car. But, would there be an advantage with a track pump? As someone with lower back problems the idea of stooping over a track pump does not thrill me.

I hear there are some track pumps that can seat tubeless tyres? Could it be done with a foot pump?

Foot pump definitely easier on the lower back ime. As far as pumping bike tyres up, there’s probably not that much difference, provided you’re using a half decent one.
For mtb.

Aye, it's for mtb, and it is a decent one.

Anyone know which track pumps can seat tubeless? Just so I can compare and see if my foot pump shifts enough air.

I can seat my tyres with the Lidl or Aldi track pumps. Only around a fiver.

I couldn’t seat non TR tyres though had to use a home made pop bottle compressor.

Whether the pump can seat a tubeless tyres depends a lot in the luck of the draw between the tyre and the rim unless you get a track pump that will charge and dump to act like a compressor. It's all about being able to push a volume of air quickly.

It might be worth considering a compressor if you're doing it often enough. I have one and chuckle when I think back to the frantic pumping and praying with a track pump hoping the tyre would catch!

Failing that, seat them with a co2 cartridge then let that out through the valve, add solution and pump conventionally.

I’ve never had much success seating tubeless with a trackpump - in the early days much frustrating time spent pumping like crazy with soapy water everywhere. Co2 quickly gets expensive and an environment disaster.

Decent track pump and an Airshot is the best asnswer IMO. Use the track pump on the car as well.

The ones that have a separate air chamber/reservoir which you pressurise then release in a whoosh to inflate the tyre instantly work really well ime, but are expensive. Mine's a Bontrager Flash Charger.

If you want to use a foot pump, the best option might be a separate air tank one - sorry can't remember what they're called by I'm sure someone will tell you shortly edit: Airshot - either retail or DIY. Folk use plastic drinks bottles wrapped with duct tape, but I'm not sure I'd trust one of those. Something like a Flash Charger track pump has the advantage that you can always pump in some extra air if the tyre is teetering on the edge of seating, but you've already Boris Johnsoned the contents of the reservoir.

I'm another track pump on the car user 🙂

So I'm not the only one!

Foot pumps are complete junk compared to a decent track pump.

I think that depends on what the track pump is meant for. Most are meant to pump small volumes at high pressure, like a road bike tyre. It would take years to pump up a car tyre with whatever one I've got. Whereas my footpump will do a car tyre in about two minutes, but good luck using it to put 120PSI in a road bike tyre.

Track pumps are great. If you have back issues you can bend your knees but that makes you look like an extra from a musical; or you can put the pump on a block so it's at the right height 🙂

But it's very rare that you're pumping from flat. The trackpump that lives in the car is a SKS renncompressor with the guage swapped out for a 60psi one so it's accurate from 20-40 (which of course makes it no use with the Airshot, but theres another pump that lives with the bikes).

checkiong/Topping up the tyres on the car by 3 or 4 psi at most only takes a few pumps.

I've only used it from completely flat once and i'd not want to do it daily but wasn't an issue.

+1

I bought (what I thought was) a decent double barrel foot pump and it is junk compared to my years old Joe Blow.

Regarding the tubeless inflator thing - I got a Lifeline trackpump/compressor barrel jobbie from Wiggle & it works really well.

OK, so lots of recomendations for track pump/airshot then. Might have to give one a try and see what my back thinks. Might have a go at seating a tyre with the foot pump first though and see if it's possible.
Cheers all!
