Looking for possible options to allow adoption of a slightly more aerodynamic/ narrower/ more pedalling efficient position on an MTB. Doesn't have to be gnar capable beyond a foot high drop off. Any ideas excluding drop bars?

narrow flat bars, long stem and bar ends? Or put some aero bars on? ~why?

I would kill myself with aero bars.

I suppose the question is does anyone make bullhorn bars that take MTB controls?

Having said that pics of setups of any kind would be nice.

The mudplugger I built up for winter has a narrow(ish) flat bar and bar ends. Both Brand X, which are well priced and as good as anything else really, apart from weight i guess.

You could get brake levers and grips onto a bullhorn but bullhorns tend to be 40-44 cm wide so are narrow for off road. I use them on my fixed gear bike on gravel and easy singeletrack but the more technical sections are not exactly fun and more a case of just getting through them.

I would go with flat bar cut down to suitable width (which I guess will not be as narrow as 44cm) with bar ends and likely to be around 50cm

the narrowest you can practically go to is about 45cm. Any less and you can't squeeze the levers/shifters/cables on.

On my “gravel” bike (old 26” mtb with bigger wheels and rigid forks), I’m running bar ends inboard of the brakelevers on wideish flat bars. Gives me a position roughly analogous to being on the hoods on drop bars. Looks a bit weird but works very nicely for road/cruisy off-road bits, and still gives me a proper mtb descending position.

Jones bars with a Gnarwhal, or whatever it’s called (pointy thing out the front)?
