Look into Voies vertes. These are route by the canals you can cycle on. I missed them when I last went to France but they look ideal for a realax tour.

I bivvied a lot which was great but I did notice most towns have a municipal camp site (tourist info is good too for finding out where it is but there are often ample signs) that is cheap and often very nice too - I'd do that if I was going again

i would camp
it costs next to nothing, so leaves loads of money to dine like a king.
which also costs next to nothing if you visit markets andf local bakeries along your route.

brittany is fantastic for touring
quiet lanes in abundance, and lots of canals too.
the brest to nantes canalside path is a cracking way to ride through brittany.

I don't know how good your french is,but these guys describe a coastal ride from Morlaix to Quimperle and back on the coastal path,850km in 11 days, this boook would be helpful http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_fr_FR=%C5M%C5Z%D5%D1&url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=le+tour+de+bretagne+a+velo ,the Plymouth to Roscoff ferry would be ideal.Ton is absolutely right about camping,as it will be the main French holidays and accomodation may be scarce, but most sites will try to fit an extra tent on.Paris may not fit in well to this.

Actually,if you're in Arbroath,Eurostar to Paris, then TGV to Morlaix,or one of the other termini in Brittany would work,Paris-Morlaix is 4hours,and take a couple of days in Paris.

if camping and Paris is a must there's a cracking campsite at Versailles and you can catch the train into the capital (we did on our honeymoon) ,The palace and gardens are worth a toby round if you've got time i.e. full day.

weve got a couple of weeks....id looked into ferries and they were wildly different...portsmouth to cherbourg £224 return £32 on the eurostar...but yeah we live in dundee so will have to train it down anyhoo..

wouldnt mind paris as the gf hasnt seen it and i used to live there for a bit...but we'd cycle their or train it if time was tight..

were both not sold on camping but willing to give it a go again, especially if i can get the new easton carbon fibre jobby..i think it weighs a kilo!not bad for a tent...thanks so fars peeps! all great stuff..

Before little carlos's turned up me n the wife used to tour in Normandy or Brittany every year , lovely friendly people , good food and delicious cider.
We used to train it from Leeds to London cycle across the city and then train to Portsmouth for the ferry to St Malo or Caen (cabin for the night crossing or kids ball pool if the cabins were full)

get in touch with the tourist info places for the areas you plan to visit they will send you wads of material about campsites ect.
