Thinking of doing this sportive, just curious as to whether anyone has done it and what is it like. just thinking of things to motivate me to get fit.

Don't know about the sportive (but I'll google it now) but the Black Mountains are a fantastic ride both on and off-road. Gospel Pass is my fave road ride. Go for it.
