Hello Everyone

Im considering getting a topeak trunk bag for my bike. Currently looking at the topeak mtx trunk bag exp pannier & the Topeak RX Trunk Bag DXP.  Whats the difference between them? They look very similar? Any reviews on people who have used them?

any advice would be much appreciated

thanks

Tom

I've used the MTX EXP, I think the other is bigger (expanding top). Loved how it clipped in, but, and it's a big but, they are not waterproof. I used the optional cover with it, which helped, but the side panniers would let spray soak through from the wheels.

I've been using Ortlieb Front Rollers for commuting instead, totally waterproof and don't half take a battering.

I think the main difference is how they fasten to the rack. MTX has a rail on the rack you just slide the bag onto and it clicks in place. DXP doesn’t, but has a plate at the bottom where you can add the fixings for clickfix, or other quick release gubbins, but comes with straps. If you’re going to leave it on semi permanent, you’re likely going to add extra hidden zip ties and stuff for security so quick release won’t be a big deal.

I had the MTX trunk drybag. It was rubbish, I'd never buy any sort of pannier from Topeak again. It lasted less than a year.

At the time I bought it to be a bit more aero on my commute than my panniers. Ortlieb didn't make a trunk bag at the time.

They're quite flimsily made, for occasional use only. The clips and zips are cheap and the material is not particularly durable.

However the main problem is that the MTX system is badly engineered and allows you to think that the bag is securely in place when you attach it, when in fact the yellow clip that holds it in place is not fully engaged. Then you find this out when you ride up a hill and it slides off the back and ends up under a car.

This happened on a couple of occasions (the sliding off, it only ended up under a car once). Enough that I became paranoid about stopping and checking that it was fully attached when I was on rides. Then the zip failed (un-related to going under the car).

Bin.

I now have an Ortlieb Rack Pack and it is a far superior product. Waterproof, better engineered attachment system, and higher quality materials.

BTW I'm not anti Topeak, they make some really innovative stuff that I own - tyre pressure gauge and Ratchet Rocket mini tool set and really like.

But their luggage, IMV, is rubbish.
