I made a new fixed top tray for my tool box today. I had a foam pallet originally but I wanted a static solution.

An old bit of laminate and some patience and I'm happy!

Looks good! Whatve you used to hold the tools in place? And also to fix the laminate in place?

I've just got foam in mine and since of the tools are a little fit heavy to stay in place (dont have enough space on the bottom of the lid ( if that makes sense)) so something like this could be a good option.

Cheers

The tools are attached using coated Terry clips from here;

Clips

I cut the laminate on the backside as per pic with a forstner bit to recesses into the board.

I've attached it with industrial strength velcro. I couldn't bear to drill holes into my box.

That looks great.

It's a nice idea. I do like having an odds and sods tray in my tool box though. Its handy for keeping stuff you wouldn't necessarily clip to a board like cable ties, tape, a marker etc.

Right, final incarnation of this for a while.

Faux carbon sheet bonded to 9mm MDF.

LOL it's way excessive, but i like it.

Is that just for outdoor use / trips away or are you using that setup in the garage too ?

@weeksy your right, it's totally OTT but it indulges my obsession for order!

It's just for the garage.

@trailrat

There's more than one layer...

But then when you need something that's on the bottom you've got to take all the other stuff out ?

Surely something like that but wall mounted makes more sense then ?

It’s been said already

Drawers are a revelation!

Pulling all those layers out would drive me insane, a problem solved by the simple drawer

Things you use all the time go at the top, things less used go to the bottom.

Never mind the toolbox, your shelf of cans and bottles has inspired me to have a clear out.  I have three or four times that number of lubes, cleaners, etc and many are probably the dregs of some twenty year old now out of favour product I’ve never finished up or binned.

@Merak - did you keep each layer at the 50mm depth, or did any of them end up less deep?
Also what's the third tool you shared in your pictures - some sort heat gun? What did you use that for?
Thanks,
Phil

@phil56

I used 55mm in the bottom layer for the big heavy stuff and 33mm in the other layers.

This was to create the indents for grabbing the tools. You just hold it at the right angle for a second or two and it leaves a nice cut out. It's just a gas lighter for a cooker or BBQ.

I've since seen folk dig a little deeper at one end of the recess which lets you push the tool up and out the foam.

If you go to image 7 in the below link the guy demos it.

Good grief that's it now the price of peli cases and foam will go through the roof. Not to mention mutli-coloured allen key sets.

Not satisfied with pushing up the prices of all bikes, tyres (gotta fill the shed up just in case), CroMo frames (breath with the trails always keep a spare), SH vices (mines bigger than yours) STW set about tools and tool storage.

Quick buy them now before the price doubles!
