Hi,

On my 210mm on-up dropper the collar kept unthreading itself over a ride, so I put a little too much blue loctite on it to stop it doing so.

Worked beautifully! now I need to service the post, feeling a little rough, and I cannot get that collar to undo. I've tried a straprench but it ain't budging - there is not a lot to get purchase on either.

How can I loosen the hold that the blue loctite has to allow me to remove the collar?

Note - I have also chalked this up on the long list of 'things what I have learned by doing it wrong'. also, this image is not the V2 post which has a smaller collar.

thanks!

indeed I have not tried that - will do so. There was an ineffectual attempt with a hairdryer... don't ask.

Heat as above, though obviously there's parts there that are also not going to like getting too hot.

You might be able to weaken it with isopropyl alcohol, though, it doesn't penetrate well so is good for cleaning off surface threadlock but not brilliant at getting into a locked thread. Sealing some in with a plastic bag can be effective

Hmm, that's a big thread for Loctite to get a grip on. The breakout torque is obviously higher that you've been able to apply. Two options, lower the breakout torque or apply more force. Most metal components and O rings will easily withstand 100 Deg C without any difficulty. I'd put some eye protection on, heat that up with a heat gun to soften the Loctite & have another go with your strap wrench. I'd do this with the post back in the frame.

When you say strap wrench? are you talking industrial quality or something for taking jam jar lids off?

@Davesport - happy to be directed to something really good! I suspect mine are jam jar (they are plastic, big rubber strap - phwoar!) but of a large size.

Cheap nail polish remover with acetone can be used to help breakdown loctite.  You can also buy loctite remover.

@big_scott_nanny you anywhere near east lothian? I'll loan you mine if that would help. Search for Bahco strap wrench.

@Davesport - quite close, Stirling, but I got it fiexed.

To let interested folks know - hot water worked, plus taping up the collar and using a pair of these borrowed from the neighbour. Job jobbed, got a lovely slidey pole again 🙂
