Having sold a 1x10 as on lonfer steep rides I needed a lower gear I have been pondering an alfine again. Input on the 11 reliability issues and whether they have been cured would be great. Anyway I have been working out the gearing and would appreciate someone saying whether I am correct in my thinking below.

Reading online it would appear that an alfine 11 has a gear spread of 408.5% and an alfine 8 has 307% would I be correct in calculating that an 11-36% cassette has a range of 227.27%?

I realise the % differences between gears will differ with the following roughly applying:
alfine 8 - 22,16,14,18,22,16,14
alfine 11 - 29 first to second, then 13% - 14%
11-36 cassette - ranging from 10.5% to 18% based on 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-36

Am I right in my thinking / calculations?
Cheers.

no. 11-36t had a range of 36/11=3.27=327%.

Thanks but is that really correct?
11-22 would be a 100% increase
11-33 would be a 200% increase
3/11 = 27% so 227%?

With a 20T sprocket on an Alfine 8 it is equivalent to having a 12-38 cassette.

Ratios are 0.53, 0.64, 0.75, 0.85, 1.00, 1.22, 1.42 and 1.61

Ah ha, I knew I had the Alfine 11 info here somewhere. Ratios are -

0.527, 0.681, 0.770, 0.878, 0.995, 1.134, 1.292, 1.462, 1.667, 1.888, 2.153

So if you have a 20T sprocket it is roughly a 9-38 cassette.

Your calculations are correct, for the way you do them. However, the ratios in an alfine are not calculated that way so you cant compare them. To compare you need to calc ratios the way mickolas states.

eg 11 - 22 is a 100% increase (or decrease, in real terms). this means that the ratio is 100% more than it was, hence it becomes 200% of the original.
