To ride or not to ride?

[#13530622]

I suffered a double fracture to my proximal humerus on 31st March and started intensive physio a month ago and I’m itching to get out!

I have managed to maintain a reasonable level of fitness by riding my spin bike in the garden watching the Giro and this week I have enjoyed riding the Dauphiné. I definitely feel like I could manage a road ride on my own without feeling vulnerable or anxious of crashing but the wife isn’t happy and is really worried that a fall off the bike could set me back weeks.

My last X-ray showed the bones to have healed as well as I could have hoped for, I definitely feel ready but wanted to question the hive’s mind in case my plans are a bit ambitious??

What does your medic and your physio say? Do that probably.

I'd take a day or two off after that 😀

I asked my physio about running and cycling, she basically said that as long as nothing was too painful, any movement is good for my recovery. I have been running for a few weeks now without any incident or excessive pain.
I feel totally ready for a road ride where I know I’m in control of the bike and the chance of anything unexpected has to be fairly low. If I hadn’t mentioned it to the wife, I wouldn’t have posted the thread. I have to take on board her comments but just wanted the thoughts of others.

Sounds like you're off out for a cafe ride in the morning then.

I guess take it easy first time out and see how it goes, find out how the arm feels with the cut and thrust of bumps and steering etc

Enjoy! Banana bread is good for bones 😉

Fractured Pelvis/hip socket January. On crutches for 3 months. Saw the specialist and he said I could start to mobilise more, no high impact, so got back on the turbo just to see how the 'ass' held up (broke wing, hip socket and the sit bones). Main worry was the hip socket healing, but for the bike, the sit bone takes the hits. I was fine and did this a couple of times a week, added in walking etc. Did a three 60-90 minute road rides in early May whilst on holiday in Bala, including one with a few hills. Mid may I'd done a 3 1/2 hour gravel ride on my CX bike, and was back commuting on the bike.

My wife was worried as I have got smashed up bad before, but she now does Wild swimming, so understands if told you 'can't do' something - she's recovering from a broken foot (fell whilst camping).

You are probably OK at 10 weeks - I left mine 12-13 weeks as I fractured a weight bearing joint.

I'd say as long as it doesn't hurt, go for it.

I fractured my scaphoid a week before you and have been back on the roadie for nearly 3 weeks. The fracture clinic told me that the bone has nearly healed, the vibrations from the roadie would be a good thing and it was risk management going forward.

They were going to discharge me but decided to get me back in a week on Tuesday for a final x-ray for piece of mind. Which will be near enough 13 weeks from my crash.

I'm probably going to go for a general mountain bike ride next weekend.

We decided on a compromise, a road ride on the single speed MTB.
It felt great to be out, just turning the pedals with the wind in my hair, probably not done much for my fitness but definitely helped my mind state!!

I’m feeling more confident and will be getting out on the road for a proper ride very soon.

I'd caution you a little, I got back on the bike probably a little too soon after a radius fracture and ultimately broke the bone again.  Jury was out on whether it was causation or correlation but the end result was it broke in exactly the same place, bent the plate and ripped the screws out.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I am struggling with arthritis in my hip and trying to get back on the bike. Just considering a hip replacement. Both GP and physio have suggested it might be good to cycle but I haven't  been riding for over a year.

First problem was  lifting my leg my leg high enough to actually get on. Fitted a dropper post to my fat bike and this has partially solved this. So went out this morning for a short local spin in the woods. Managed pretty well, about 4km in 38 minutes.but found difficulties with balance and handling, mobility issues. Guess it will take time to get these back up to scratch. Just have to persevere. Hoping the joint doesn't  deteriorate further before I can get something done about it.
