I have a '99 Scott Comp racing XC bike and i have now brought a Zesty to do the off road stuff. I use the Scott to commute to work on but now i have the Zesty i would like to change a few bits on the Scott it to make it a more focused commuter.

Do you have any ideas of modifications that will make the Scott a bit better to commute on?

I would have thought the quickest and cheapest way would be to change the tyres to road or semi road. I have a cannondale for fun and the old trek for commuting and tyres work a dream. But if you have far to go you could change the handlebars and the forks, depends on your budget and preference

I did the same with my trek, I put on skinnier wheels and tyres (schwable marathon plus) bomb proof, and locked out the forks and rear, I have been through a few chains mainly because of always being on the big ring, disc brakes pads get worn out quicker too. It's never going to be as fast as a road bike but it's a good workout.

I put some rigid forks on, infact I have 2 sets, one lightweight carbon set and one cromo which takes mudguards. Some light fast rolling tyres and a comfy seat.

I was thinking that tyres would probably be the first things. The XC tyres on it now are so worn they are slicks anyway. Any recommendations on tyres?

conti travel contacts would be my tyre choice,
super puncture protection and lighter than schwalbe marathons,

tyres, flat bar cut down in width to a comfy level with barend (nothing worse than trying to battle into the wind with wide bars), longer stem if you have a short stem, mudguards.

I use a '93 Orange Clockwork.
Rigid, flat-barred, bar ends, slicks/semi-slicks, mudguards, 48-36 chainrings (never used the granny), 11-28 block. Perfect.

93 Scott peak here. Found it abandoned in the snow before Xmas. So now it has 720mm risers no gears 36-16 SS and slicks.

Next I'm after some guards and a rack but refuse to spend any cash on it. Only spent 2.50 on an innertube so far.
