At work so can't judge if it works, but here goes i have thule 561 racks on square bars which uses the clamp system, however mate has aero bars do i "need" to use the T piece type fittings or will it just clamp to these also no harm done?

Clamps fit fine, although they may scratch the bars a little.
If you're trying to get a lot of bikes on, Ts are useful as they can be mounted further out, directly above the rack feet.
