Hello, I have a four-year-old Raven Enduro (Rohloff) in black with a Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost and and about £150 more of upgraded kit: cost new was £2,200. It's in very good condition.
I can't find any for sale online so have no clue to a guide price. Any ideas on how much I should ask for it - will be selling soon?
Many thanks for any suggestions.
Joe
£800-£1000 I reckon
Most of its second hand value (as I'm sure you know) is in the rear wheel.
The wheel including rim, ex-box, disc, shifter, etc would go for about £600-£700 on ebay.
Depending on fork, brakes and condition then maybe £900-£1000 for the complete bike.
I'd probably split it and sell the bits separately; you will get the best price that way, although it maybe a hassle.
It's a good deal at that price. I love mine. Why sell?
Thanks for the advice. mountaincarrot - it's the last thing I want to do but things have got grim - I've pretty much sold everything else I can. #ineedamiracle 🙂
You normally get more splitting it - there are less buyers with £1k to spend than there are with £500 or less.
thanks footflaps
I've got one of those! What size is it and if you let me know a price I'll mention it to my riding groups - you never know....
Thanks woodsman - Size 559M (off the invoice). If you want to email me steeplechasing at gmail dot com, I'll send you a PDF of the full spec
Joe
Oh sorry, given what I've read on here I'd happily take £1100 for it - I can send some pics too
Same size as mine!
I know the advice is normally to break a bike for spares, but a Thorn may be a special case.
Has it got a hanger and cable guides for derailleurs ? If not, you may be stuck with the frame long after you've sold everything else.
Even if it has, Thorn are a bit of a niche bike that everyone associates with Rohloff. I doubt there's many people looking for a Thorn frame without looking for a Rohloff hub at the same time.
No hanger, and I could be interested in the frame if it does get split. Agree with the seller that it would be best to sell as a complete unit if poss.
Also consider putting it on the Thorn forum for sale, it might not get that many viewers but they will all know exactly what they are looking at.
As for the frame alone I seem to remember that the STW review of the bike a few years ago mentioned that they thought it would make a great single speed frame so this might be just the place to sell it.
Sell the hub, then singlespeed it and sell the bike? It has an eccentric BB doesn't it? Lovely bike.
I'd also agree that anyone looking for a Thorn Raven will know exactly what they are looking at.
I bought one with hub for 900 quid last year
Very glad i bought it to split out the rear wheel . Frame is stuck in 1972 what a piece of crap to ride .....built to a price point for sure and given a silly frame only price to make their complete bikes look like great value
Mines now the missus commuter and one of te ebb bolt mounts has fallen off the frame - i enquired about getting them to do me a custom 29er before brant came out with the td-1. Glad i didnt go custom with them after spending 2 months on the raven enduro pre td-1
Many thanks to all - woodsman, I'll get those pics to you as soon as I can (can't find my bloody card reader!)
The Thorn forum looks an interesting possibility. I also emailed Thorn for price guidance and they said to knock off a third of the new price and 5% per year assuming 8 out of 10 condition, so around half the price I paid sounds right.
Joe
If the price and spec is right I will buy. The only real problem is the distance to pick up as I don't drive. Unable to work how to email you, I assume I can? JB
rebuilt mine over the weekend - found the bit for the EBB - might fire up the mig and tack it back on ....
running 29inch wheels with 700x32 cross tires ... handles better than it ever did with 26ers ! - commuting bike now - take me just 15 minutes to swap the rohloff wheel onto my ragley though 😀
anyone know of any touring forks with an a-c of 450ish ? and fender/rack and disk mounts ? rear end on this cant take panniers so it would be nice to have some upfront for picking up the shopping
29in wheels in a 26in frame, with a Brooks saddle and tri-bars?! The only way you could make it more of a frankenbike would be to fit front panniers. Oh, hang on.... 😉
what a piece of crap to ride
Bit harsh I think - decent enough steel frame, albeit worth about half frame only what Thorn charge for it...
Back on topic, I'd agree with the opinion that these are one thing that sells better as a full bike. Just don't give away any boutique bits with it - swap them out for more basic stuff (if of course you have that type of thing lying around).
I paid £2100 for mine, it's nearly six years old and I've probably spent about £300 on it in all that time... So even if it was worth nothing now £400 a year is not too bad!
maybe a bit harsh - but it was too steep , the mud clearance was horrendous , the rear end was harsh for the 500 quid that thorn wanted you could do much much better though i think was my point !
frankenbike it maybe but it is to serve a purpose - once i pick up some diacompe or shimano r600 levers it will be going drop bars and some 29er schwalbe marathons. I can only have 2 bikes at my new house sadly this is the most versatile thing i have that im willing to trash by commuting on as well as riding ...
Don't agree, I really enjoy riding mine! No wonder you have negative comments look what you've done to it man. 😉
It did develop a crack after five ''well ridden'' years. I liked it so much I had a new tube fillet brazed in at Thorn's expense!

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending.
JB, I emailed you yesterday - hope you got it. Woodsman, will also email you details and pics. Sorry for delay
Joe
Just paid 1140 (4 days ago)for this mans bike (he did a 600 mile return journey)thorn enduro mountain bike 4 years old but less than 500 miles use(not nescarily an advantage). Cane Creek Thudbuster seatpost and hope mini disk and a pathetic rack. Thorn say the rear is not designed to take heavy weight daft if you consider that off road would put more stress on the frame and I wouldn't have it loaded off road. Any way if I can find a rack that can fit I will replace it with something substantialy. Any ideas? The Rack bolt holes only come half way down the stays(may not be the right name the down tube) Due to helping a mate putting in my bathroom I have had a miniscule amount of riding hopefully tonight I will get in an hour. Either way I enjoyed what little use i have had on it. I liked the riding postion and i will get back when I have some more use out of it.
