Thieves have been slicing cycle racks in Oxford and presumably hiding the cut under tape so unsuspecting cyclists aren't actually locking their bikes to anything:

Worthy of a reminder to people to be extra vigilant.

It's got to be at least 20 years since thieves worked out that they could slice parking meters using a scaffold cutter and all the councils welded bars to them. The problem now is cheap cordless angle grinders - I don't see a technical solution 🙁

This came up a few years ago I think (maybe not Oxford).

So are they slicing the straps so your bike falls off later or of bikes left unattended on bike racks? Don't you have a security chain  (or 6) on when you leave it?

Thom Yorke once beat me to the only spare bike rack space outside the KA pub in Oxford; I initially thought he was a tramp. I could have gotten his autograph or pleaded with him to reconcile with Ronan Keating, perhaps changing the course of musical history.

Lesson: you really do have to be vigilant around the bike racks of Oxford.
