With the colder days I'm layering up.
My question is is a thermal top different to a base layer?
I've been wearing sports direct thermal long sleeve tops but they seem to hold the sweat.
Is a base layer the same as a thermal top?
Yes.
Cotton based ones for skiing hold onto sweat longer than a synthetic or Merino based one. If you're working hard they all get wet.
Get a merino baselayer, much more breathable and if they get wet much more comfortable on the skin
Merino is good for winter, but I find a quality lightweight synthetic one much better for warmer weather as they shift moisture quicker.
I'm a HUGE fan of merino and own loads of it, but it doesn't wick as well as synthetic so if you are a heavy sweater I'd avoid it as a base layer. If you're on a Sports Direct type budget then Decathlon do base layers which are similar to the venerable Helly Hansen that keep you warm and wick away the moisture. I have some nice fancy 50 quid rrp Craft base layers and an Assos one with a retail price of £75 (which I'll wear under a Rapha Merino 😉 ), but the Decathlon ones I use to commute in are 90% of the performance for 25% of the price.
Better start saving.
Craft make a decent one - its got a windstopper front and comes in L/S or S/S versions. Use them to commute. I think I picked them up in a sale as they look pricy now.

Depends if you like itchy wool merino next to your baby soft skin.
Helly hansen lifa for me (cant stand itchy merino)
Sport Pursuit have the Sub base layers on sale again. I find the RX ones warm enough under a jacket for all but the sub zero days. But they I run very hot.
Cheap as chips.
