Fwiw I'm on an Android phone using chrome

Yep. Me too. I don't think it was even as long as two seconds to open this thread again.

Out of interest, whose narrative is that? It's sad that it's actually causing you to struggle. I must have missed it?

Read back on this very thread. There's plenty of people complaining.

I don't understand what they're doing differently from me but it's fine here. A 2 second load time isn't exactly the End Of Days and no different from the rest of the Web.

Is it the mobile theme that's on it's arse perhaps? I use the site on my phone vanishingly rarely so that may be an explanation.

Complaining perhaps, but I don't recall anyone saying anything remotely like

"the forum is dead because the pages take two seconds to load, you're all literally worse than Hitler"

It's clear that the forum is taking a lot longer than 2 seconds to load for some people. Even though that maybe different to your experience. Both experiences may be valid?

I also think slow page loading and forum activity levels are two different things. I don't recall anyone saying the forum is "dead". A fair few, me included have noticed a drop off in activity which predates the spell of it being "sunny outside".

I don't see anything wrong with pointing that out, as for many of us, the busyness of this place is a key thing which makes the site what it is.

Could be as 'simple' as a mismatch between server, wordpress, adverts solution and forum software?

Even on my phones 4g connection, the site loads ok for me...posting can take a wee bit longer but it isn't bad.

I'm a digital sub so don't get the adverts, so suspect that has helped.

I don't get any logout issues so I'm assuming when I cleared all my browsing history about 8 weeks ago it has helped (but I don't tend to do that, that was a one off)...

Aware people are getting different experiences but I've no idea why that would be.

I haven't seen any update posts from stw but I'm assuming issues are being worked on and solved when they can.

Decent enough i5 x16gb and SSD laptop. W10. Chrome. Adverts.

More than one tab = whole laptop grinds to a halt. I suspect it's the adverts.

Working usually I can open like 20 tabs...

Sure.

Plenty of people have been whining about a decrease in traffic for years. (Yet they're still here, whining.) Only Mark knows the actual answer here.

The motherboard on my daily driver desktop I'm typing on right now is an AM3 board circa 2011. RAM is 16GB. I'm a tab whore, my browser is probably nearer 100 tabs than 20. STW performance is fine aside from posting being a bit sluggish.

I block adverts at a network level though (despite the fact that adverts shouldn't make a difference as I'm a Full Member) so maybe that's related? IDK.

Cougar, your willingness to defend the people who are your friends at stw is admirable, but also annoying and unrealistic, there is a reason your "magic ipad" is a meme on this forum, and it isn't because you have a fair and balanced view. And frankly you arguing with everybody who sees the issues with the forum, and the constant denial of those issues isn't as helpful to your mates as you might think it is, in fact it probably has the reverse effect

whining

🙄 l think you are one of the good guys on here, your posts often make me laugh. However your self appointed role as guardian of STW's honour on this thread in particular and bristling at any perceived criticism of the site is a little tedious tbh. Pointing out issues, especially on this thread which was created by the site owners for that express purpose is ok. Isn't it?

Point the first they aren't my friends/mates, I've met a few of the STW staff maybe four times.

Point the second I don't have an iPad, magic or otherwise, let alone it "being a reason that it's a meme." Perhaps you're confusing me with Drac? I don't do fruit-based devices, I wouldn't have the first clue.

Point the third I'm not arguing, I'm merely sharing my experience just like everyone else is doing. For all the QQ most forums wouldn't permit this.

And repeatedly saying that those with a different experience are "whining". Can you see how that grates?

Stop whining then?

I take your point but come on now. The site has had a major upgrade, it was announced prior to the migration that they expected teething problems. And it's well documented that STW has one full-time developer and one part-time developer, both of whom still have a day job.

"Page loading is slow using Firefox on Android 15, it takes about 10 seconds" is probably helpful. "It's all shit" not so much and gives me the hump so I'm sorry if I appear a little brusque. Folk are seemingly having a different experience from me, I've repeatedly asked "why?" and been met with either silence or arguments. 🤷‍♂️

The original poster?

I don't know. If you're going to come belting into a forum with "opinions" then you're going to be met with "other opinions," whether that's about the forum itself, politics, religion, Doctor Who, football... that's how public forums work. You don't get to voice your opinion and then squeal "cancel culture" just because someone disagrees with you.

Probably because they don't know "why"? If Mark and the team who manage the site don't, how on earth are ordinary users expected to know? Dismissing someone else's poor experience because it doesn't chime with yours and because they don't have the technical insight to articulate exactly why that might be, to your satisfaction doesn't seem fair to me. ISTR recall you saying you never access the site on a phone? A quick Google suggests that's how 62% of people browse the web, so it's not surprising your experience is different to so many.

I'm going to bow out now as I've had a few Friday beers and I don't want to get drawn into a bun fight. My final thought though. Users pointing out site performance issues or problems they are experiencing isn't "whining" or disloyal and doesn't mean they think those issues are simple to resolve. Nor does it mean they don't like it here, but just that they'd like to have a better user experience. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Jesus! Who TF has done that on this thread?

Things that never happened number 273.

I challenge you to give one example from this thread of someone complaining of "cancel culture" because someone disagreed with them? Just one?

One of the reasons that I occasionally chime in with my, generally positive, experience is to attempt to balance the view. I think it's important for folk to appreciate that it's not bad for everyone, it's just that we tend not to hear from the folk who aren't having any problems. You're right to say that Mark and Co. need to try to fix it for those having issues, but it must be frustratingly difficult to pin down the problem when it's not consistent.

FWIW, most of my STW interactions are using a phone.

And also FWIW, I've not been shy in pointing out problems when I've encountered them.

In the meantime, I might start a new thread, asking folk what topics/threads/subjects they think aren't making it into the forum these days that made it (apparently?) busier previously.

That is a good question. I don’t find the forum filling my idle hours so well these days and it does appear less busy to me but I don’t have any facts and figures to explain the difference. Similarly I don’t much browse STW on my phone these days as it is a little awkward to navigate and slow to respond at times, though I find it adequately usable on an iPad or MacBook. I can’t remember what used to be different that made the site easier to use or even whether this site is the same as it ever was and other parts of the internet have improved and this site just suffering by comparison. Helpful aren’t I 😀

Just wondering if the 'Forum Information' bit at the bottom might slow things down - are the stats counted for every page being loaded, to say how many million posts/threads/users etc. there are? They don't show up consistently; this thread doesn't show them on my PC (Firefox/Linux), but does on my mobile (Android). It isn't useful info for me; perhaps don't show then when in a thread, or have a separate dashboard where they are visible.

Actually, the stats on my PC: don't show in Chromium, they do in Firefox.

I'm no coder, but looking at the code I don't think they're live stats:

9.7 M

@mikejd Go to the forum you want (Chat, Bike, whatever) and there should be an 'Add topic' option in blue at the top of tge list.

It doesn't appear on the Latest Posts list

Dark mode, android, chrome. Inserting a link the text is white on white (I've highlighted a word to illustrate).

Might be thick here, but the “latest post” link has gone. IMG_1555.png taken me ten minutes to click 38 next page to get to this.

example for the other long thread on here to show what I mean. No way I’m clicking 68 pages to see Weeksy’s latest post (no offence)

Firstly: you dont have to click 38 times. Just select from the drop down.

secondly. I’ll look at why the quick link has vanished and get it back.

I still find pictures on here somewhat poor. I use Flickr, why, well, because it's what i've always used and it works on each and every forum.... Apart from here.

Just posted 4 pics in the racing thread, but only 1 appears and that appears twice. It's a direct copy and paste from other forums and all the pics show there perfectly well.

Sure, i could save all the pics to my laptop, then drag and drop them into here... but that is just crazy and obviously increases the load on these servers anyway. I find it hard to grasp how out of 5 forums, this once again is the only exception to the rules.

Is there a way to turn off dark mode?

My Account->Preferences shows a "save preferences" button, but nothing else

Just goes to show how different use cases impact the experience. As I mostly use my phone for photos and also post from my phone, adding photos has never been faster, simpler or more reliable for me.

That means copying from phone to laptop, then waiting 30s per image for it to get to drag and drop it in. Then it drops into a random part of the post instead of where I actually wanted it.

I have been doing this a fair while 😂

Uploading photos - there is a huge amount of functionality that never used to be there in the old forum - and that makes it hard to navigate. I think I have grasped it now but its multiple steps to post each photo. But you can put them into text in the right places if you want etc.

You could also post from you phone.

Use the MyMedia link at the bottom of the text box to select which photos, no need to drag.

Add the images then you can write text around the images.

Some of my posts are 1000+ words about racing, it's not happening on a phone.

I know you're a fanboi here and very defensive of the place but if I can post in the same manner on 20 different forums all using the same wall of text, it's not ridiculous to think I should be able to on here. This is the ONLY place I've found where I can't post multiple flickr images on a topic.

Even weirder is, I used to be able to 🤣🤣

Until the recent changes, I could post happily. Although I think only 3 images per post. Which again is bizarre, plus the ONLY place where I can't post 5, 10 whatever number of pics in a particular post.

I'm all for supporting the forum, but in the last 12 months since people paid money, renewed subs, added funds, it's actually got worse in terms of functionality not better

Even the weird way some of the Articles show now, just bizarre.

Yeah or that.

Sorry Weeksy I didn’t realise you were writing a mini article, so I can understand it would be awkward on an iPhone now I know.

Do you not sync your phone and laptop photos?

Yes I do like it here but you want something almost tailored made as you don’t have the photos on your laptop. I don’t think there is a limit of photos for full members but I might be wrong on that.
