Colin Furze is at it again, this time creating a magnet suspension bike.

As soon as I saw him sit on it, torsional rigidity and damping started flashing warning lights in my head.

I saw this on Insta, it's hilarious - as he says, the risk of nutcrush is only the first problem that comes to mind...

It does suggest that powerful magnets could form the basis of a spring for future shock absorber designs - although it's going to struggle to be as light as an air spring unit so...

10/10 for stiction avoidance. 1/10 for everything else. I'd love to try to ride it, same goes for the bicycle of springs!

'Opposing', not 'apposing'

Imagine the things you would collect on your ride....

I think some car dynamic dampers use some sort of magnets to alter the shocks. But I assume that's the damping part, not the spring part.

Yeah, some automotive dampers use magnets and damping fluids that contain metallic particles. The magnets are then used to increase the fluid viscosity and thereby increase and decrease damping 👍

Maybe not the full airspring but what about a magnet bottom out thing? Hydraulic ones exist or even a buttercup glide core stiction reducer?

love his stuff, and think there’s something in what he created- even if it’s commuter based

Surely for any serious use the weight is going to be an issue.  You need a big magnet, it needs to be a big lump of steel, that's heavy.

If you were to ride this down the road and stop level with a car (at traffic lights for example) do we think that the magnets could fry the ECU or disable an EV? I watched the video of when he made it and he mentions keeping electronics away from the magnets due to their strength.

Eeegh is he still doing this schtick. Boring.

It's clearly a crap idea. Clickbater

I say chapeau to him.  He took an idea and ran with it at presumably not inconsiderable time, cost and effort (albeit with a youTube video in mind).

As mad as they come but that's often where the magic happens.

10 out of 10 for effort.

The magnets are set up to repel, so they're the same polarity, so why does he have a red and a blue mount on each pair cos that suggests they are different.  My mind would be soothed if they were paired as two reds and two blues.

Christ on a (magnet) bike!

No one, least of all Furze is claiming it's a good idea!

True. Still find him unoriginal. But I'm just some guy, ya know ?

Fair enough, it'd be boring if we all liked the same stuff 🙂  Just pointing out that he doesn't take what he does seriously. He's a skilled amateur engineer and fabricator, but it's just entertainment at the end of the day.  Of course it's not for everyone 👍
