After riding thtough some peak grime today, on a short road section on Rushup Edge my front hub seized.
My mate went off to get the car leaving me pushing back, wheel up in the air clearly with a 'problem' with the bike.
I saw loads of riders on the road as I forlornly walked back - perhaps 20. How many stopped or even asked if I was alright?
1.
How many cars - some with bike racks, empty trailers or being vans - stopped?
0.
If I see someone with a puncture on their bike I usually stop to help - but it was just pretty depressing today. One rider even laughed at me.
If it was a road bike I'd laugh too.
We did stop to help a newbie, with no puncture repair, at CYB week back.
Always ask if help needed on trails. Trail karma.
I wouldn't talk to me when I have to push back, angry angry man.
I'm forever asking people for stuff on trails though, 5mm Allen Key, pump, Swarfega, 5mm allen key, pump, 5mm allen key.
Standard.
Some people couldn't care less.
Shouting "Anyone good with hubs?" at them would have been my approach.
Probably why I ride alone.
I stopped to fix a puncture last weekend. Three people rode past and all three asked either if "everything was OK" or if "I had everything I need" I've also had someone in a car pull over before now to see if I needed a lift anywhere in a similar situation.
Maybe you were just unlucky. I have a hunch that what with cycling being the new golf there has been a relatively sudden influx of people that don't really appreciate the common courtesies that are part and parcel of riding. Anybody can get a bit stuck from time to time, only polite to ask.
If you wanted help you could have asked / flagged them down / hitched...
I always ask if someone needs a hand when I pass a rider with a mechanical, just good manners.
EDIT: As for cars stopping, I think that's a different issues, cars cocoon people in their own insular worlds and make people oblivious to whats going on around them.
I stopped in my car yesterday and gave a roadie a Lift to the LBS [ halfords sadly ] as he lost his bottom jockey wheel
Always stop if i see a cyclist with a mechanical.
I was on a rainy road ride a few years ago and a spoke broke on my rear Ksyrium wheel making it unable to turn, I was carrying the bike along the road and a guy stopped, loaded a very wet me and the bike into his car which also contained his family and ran me to a shop about 10 miles away whilst checking with them on his mobile that they could do the repair. Bike fixed and back on the road in about half an hour. I guess the main point is that this was in Italy, can't see me being so lucky in the UK.
Wanna buy a front wheel Chris?
New bearing being fitted tomorrow, picking it up on Tuesday.
Are you fit - I mean, if you weren't you - would you? That helps (so I understand).
I always try and help if I'm in a position to and they look like they want it. There should be a "cyclist's code sign" when you are pushing your bike and want help as a signal to other riders (either on a bike too or in a car) to stop and help. Something like putting your helmet on the wrong way around (sorry TJ, but you might not have had too many folk stop anyway ๐ ).
I always check if I ride past someone who is fettling that they have everything they need, and have even in the past stopped the car to offer a lift to a cyclist pushing a bike - it was only later that evening that it occurred to me, perhaps a young lady might be rightfully suspicious of a bloke offering her a lift. I'd still offer again though,
No excuse for a seized hub mid ride, every one knows it and that's why they left you to your bad maintenance karma. You should be thankful that everybody joined in to teach you a valuable lesson.
ride in the peak much MSP?
;o)
Last night I asked somebody stopped at the side of the course if they were OK - then pointed out that I didn't know why I was asking as I wasn't carrying a tube, pump or any tools. We both laughed, but they didn't need any help anyway.
"Youokaymateneedahand?" without slowing down, but whilst prepared to slow down should suffice.
Good karma pays off - cheers to the dude who lent me a patch at hamsterley the other day, even if it didn't last long.
"Always stop if i see a cyclist with a mechanical."
always do it.
Can be rewarding - i had a tire blow out on my fixie - tube was useless and when ever i pumped it up even with a cardboard protector over the slash it just grew
started walking in the road in the rain and the local bus stopped and let me take the bike on FOC (had no cash just CC)
the next week i was doing my shift behind the bar and in walked the driver - bought him quite a few drinks ๐ - karma
When I used to cycle to work, I got a puncture one morning. Wen't to change the tube and discovered my spare was missing so I started pushing the bike to the office.
Another guy that worked in my building and cycled to work also, and who I had already worked out was a complete oddball, cycled up to me, looked me up and down and looked at the flat tyre then shot off without saying a thing.
Prick.

All the time and never had it happen
As above, stop for folk who are havibg a problem and at least check they've got the situation under control.
Stopped the car for a roadie the other day - fathers day, pour sole had had 2 spokes go in his rear wheel.... he looked rather forlorn, carrying his R3 down the verge...
He was 25 miles from home, his wife was en-route, he was not expecting too big a rollocking as it was 'fathers day', and he was only 200 yards from a convenient pub ๐
We picked up a roadie who was walking home. He was miserable in the car and when we reached his house we understood why - his Mrs was standing on the step, arms folded, face like thunder demanding "Alright, what's he done this time?"
