I rode The Gap at Brecon Beacons last summer and I loved every bit of it. I'm planning to go back there very soon as my birthday celebration. I'm thinking about a slight extension at the end: I'm starting at Talybont-on-Usk South, towards the reservoir - so it's basically the signposted route all the way up to Pontberngarreg. From there I'd like to avoid what I remember being quite boggy even in July: the field where the Three Rivers Ride stars (by Tynllwyn).
I'm thinking about riding North-West from Pontberngarreg up to Groesffordd (which is on the other side of A40) and then do the Three Rivers Ride to Tal-y-Ilyn and then a bridleways down to Llansantffraed. I'm not local, hence I don't know if it's worth doing that little bit in the winter, or would I regret it? I don't mind mud and wet, but I prefer riding than walking through bog for miles if I can avoid it...

You mean North-East from Pontbrengarreg which is at the North end of the Gap....
There's a very strong signal on the Strava heatmap along the trail you describe (although it's even stronger starting from the driveway for Tymawr farm a little bit further along. Also once you get to Bwlch there's a strong signal for the fire road going through the FC woods on Buckland hill, zigzagging past Buckland hall and coming back out in Llansantffraid. So go for it.
