Hi guys, I am heading up to Scotland on the 7th, 8th & 9th May.
We intend to ride Whinlatter on the Sat on the way up.
Kirroughtree on the Sunday.
And Ullswater on the Monday on the way home as antidote to all that groomed trail.
So I need your help.
First and foremost is it fun if it's wet?
Cos if it's not we can Ae.
So what's the best idea. Ride the BW both ways or as a loop?
If it's a loop then 3hr ish singletracky one would be good?
Help please
Cheers Jason
The definitive route is over highstreet, bit of a leg pumper back along Ulswater to finish, nice to get up onto the Roman road for the adventure, but riding wise a bit squelchy in all but a drought, think old school.
Just seen 3hrs, bit longer than that me thinks.
Park at Pooley Bridge.
South-east up to The Cockpit
South West down to Howtown.
round the back of Hallin Fell to Sandwick, pick up the bridleway round to Rooking (near Patterdale)
Push up to Boredale Hause
Over Bedafell Knott, down to Bannerdale. Spin back along the road (or get the ferry from Howtown ๐ you could always go back up to the Cockpit for a final blast down if you've time.
Yes, fine in the wet (if you don't mind wet rock). Its a staple low-level route in bad conditions.
(Note, its years since I've been over Boredale Hause, can't rememebr which bridleway I rode down then)
Park in glenridding, ride through/past the campsite and allong that bridleway, turn right at the village and right again up the 1st valley, old skool climb to the top, decent is pretty boring (well, you get 50mph off road, but not techy) then ride back to start, well under 3 hours IIRC.
You are going to the Lakes to ride Whinlatter? Really? Noooooooooooooooooo. There are so many better trails close by to Whinlatter. We rode Ullock Pike at the weekend and it was blindingly good. Seriously, ditch Ae and Kirroughtree and stick to the Lakes.I really like the latter but Saturday reminded me just how stunning Lakeland riding is.
Re Ullswater
Brudgend climb to Boredale Hause. Descend via Rooking. Keep high to go over Silver Crag then on joining main path can dio and out and back or simply return via the lower path. All good!
Cheers

No no The Lakes are rubbish stick to the trail centers ๐ what do you want with all that natural stuff?
Different strokes for different folks kids.
Thanks for the route advice though. ๐
So no really definitive route then!
Anybody else got owt to add (about the route..)
We rode Ullock Pike at the weekend and it was blindingly good
Why did you go and ride what is clearly marked as a footpath (also a very popular walking route) on a weekend?
If your going to do that clear off north of the border!
for fun though just do Ullswater in both directions from Glenridding
its all footpath, or so we were told by a prat out for a stroll who couldn't read a map or the 3+ huge signs saying bridalway
no really definitive route
Its a single stretch of trail, how many definitions do you want? ๐
surely if you're driving south down the M6, it makes sense to ride from Pooley Bridge end?
Why ride a footpath? Simply because it's a marvellous descent and the legislation relating to footpaths in England and Wales isn't the cut and dried " you can't ride them" that the commonly held belief by so many mountain bikers is. Add to that the fact that I've yet to come across another mountain user who is anything other than curious or genuinely bemused by the fact that we would be daft enough to endure taking a bike up into the hills and you have your answer. The hills are big enough for everyone to get on.

I have been looking through some old post and something that takes in Boredale Hause and the Lakeside path sounds favourite to me.
Excuse the stupid question (i've never been) but is this pretty much what you have described? If so how long roughly will it take for semi fit, reasonably competent riders?
Cheers Jason
Found this on an older post.
[...so if you like the sound of the ullswater path then try:
patterdale-bridgend-boredale hause-boredale-martindale-bedafell knott-boredale hause-rooking-high bridleway north towards lake shore-lake shore bridleway-boredale-boredale hause-rooking (again)-patterdale
that's my 1pworth for an ullswater lakeshore route anyhow! Starts from the same place as the helvellyn route too.]
Does the boredale-martindale-bedafell knott-boredale house section mean going up a BW then turning round and coming back down?
Want Sanny said, especially the bit about skipping Whinlatter. Could do Borrowdale Bash instead of Whinlattr although it has been sanitised.
Mugboo - no, its a loop down to Boredlae from Boredal Hause, round to the next valley (Martindale) and back up to Boredale Hause.
Hi Mugboo
Once you do the climb and descent, the going is a lot quicker. Returning along the low paths is pretty quick but still a lovely ride so best for you to make the call at the bottom of the descent. Lovely riding there.
Sorry but my previous e mail wasn't making out that Whinlatter is rubbish but knowing how good the natural stuff in the Lakes is, I'd always recommend that in preference unless you just fancy a ride without needing maps. ๐
No worries dude, its STW, you ask and you receive. It's all opinions, no rights, no wrongs..
My Lakeland rides include using Grizedale to explore the great BW's & Coniston.
Garburn, The Borrowdale Bash & Hellvellyn. I love the Lakes but sadly from Bradford it's means finding a whole day and they are rare at the mo!
A friend has a place they let me have cheap up in Moffatt so every now and again we sneak in a lads trip oop North.
Thanks again for the help ๐
