So, a well known branded shop run by a large well known London based cycling and fitness retail group will now no longer stock 26" tyres for general mountain bikes as "They're concentrating on the 29er market".

When asked about what they thought of 29er DH bikes it was noted that, yes, they'd still be doing 26" DH and Freeride bikes. (!?)

Seems like the great marketing machine has had it's way on the way we're going to be forced to ride. (as far as I'm concerned)

Good job I have no plans to change what I'm riding, better stock up on 26" tyres though...

You going to have a rant at Niner bikes for setting up and only making 29ers?

Sure the shop might rue this mistake but it's there business at the end of the day. I've found LBSs a bit slow to stock 29" stuff so maybe they've spotted a little gap there?

I think my point is that we're being sold/pushed the 29er thing, or maybe those starting off in the MTB thing are being pushed.
Don't want to offend but I kind of think that SSW are somewhat to blame too.
If DH and FR rigs all went 29" then maybe I wouldn't mind but I think it's rather sad.

The main thing that saddens me is the whole "next big thing" and fashion that seems so intrinsic to the sport. Can't people just get out and ride? A bike, any bike whatever the wheel size?

Err, well this shop is stopping selling 26" stuff except DH and FR.(and road)

I don't want to rant as I don't really know how it makes me feel. I just don't like it for some reason.

I'm not in the market for a new bike.

a well known branded shop run by a large well known London based cycling and fitness retail group

So find a small, independant shop then and support them.

Why not do justt hatrather than wineing on the internet about one shops stocking policy? Maybe they've not sold a 26" tyre in months?

As for DH/FR, it's a bike shop in London, you don't need a 2.5 supertacky minniion for hucking off trafalgar square.

I bet they don't stock many 1.1/8th quill stems either ๐Ÿ™

Centre of London seems just the place for a 29er. No tight corners, and pretty flat. I love commuting on mine.

I hope that in a few year they realise that a 29er just isn't as good overall as a 26r....mind u, I think they already know! I suppose they're just making money while they can as technology hasnt advanced enough over the past couple of year so theyre struggling with ideas, then some yank clown comes on the scene and says "i know! lets make bigger wheels" get a pro rider to say how fast it is on the descents while he beats a load of mincers on 26ers, promote it in the mags n tell everyone how much better it rolls over technical terrain...its called marketing bullshit!!

Soon the novelty to many people who have bought one will wear off and we will all look back in years to come and laugh about how many people got fobbed off by it! ๐Ÿ˜†

around where i live its the opposite, not a 29er tyre in sight at LBS.
and 1 shop i visited told me that 26ers are still out selling wagon wheelers by about 15 - 1 in his shop.
29ers are still very much a niche thing out here in welsh valleys.

+1 they have their place,

tall people, XC and SS

I'm tall, ride XC and Singlespeed so they suit me down to the ground. Won't go back unless i buy a Full Sus bike to play on.

LBS don't stock the tyre I'm after - Freeborn sell them in pairs, I want one. That's it.
