When you moving? There is plenty of riding and drinking to be done. I ride with a few guys on Monday's and Wednesday's, biketreks are Tuesday & thursdays. Feel free to mail me at pkgraham at btopenworld.com if you want any info about the place, I have lived in Kendal for 27 of my 34 years.

It's not bad - I couldn't afford Kendal though so went to Ulverston instead (30 minutes from Kendal, the plus side being 15 minutes from Coniston!)

It's a great part of the country to wind up in though ๐Ÿ™‚

Pretty sure, though I have never been my self, that people ride from the peddler cafe in kendal on a tuesday night?? could be a Thursday. Give KMB a ring they will be able to help out I'M SURE

Biketreks rides are from the shop in Ambleside on tuesday nights 6.30 and all over the south lakes on Thursdays there are normally updates on the website if not call the shop and they will let you know.

Lucky man moving to the lakes great place to love. Were slowly working our way north.

There's interesting riding on Scout Scar and The Helm (the nearest hills) and the Bog Trotters have a regular Wednesday evening ride usually not too far away.

I can't tell you about beer.

Just going to add - some people don't seem to settle in Kendal, so I would rent somewhere to start off with and give the town a try. There are plenty of places not too far away though that offer alternatives (if you look within a 30 minute drive you are basically drawing a circle from Lancaster - Ulverston - Ambleside - Kirkby Stephen - Ingleton

There are some decent pubs to be found, don't go out there much myself these days though!

If I were doing it again I would probably be looking at moving to Stavely as it is a pretty convinient place set in very nice scenery and with good beer and bikes on tap!

South Lakes local here. Kendal is a great town, and I'm sure you'll love it. Loads of good riding on your doorstep in Stavely, with Wheelbase as your lbs and a brewery next door. 20 mins to Ambleside and 30 mins to Grizedale, what's not to like. I'm stuck in Preston and it's pants down here, can't wait to move back to Cumbria. If you need route advice drop us a line, more than happy to help out.

+ 1 million. Don't think I've ever met a singlespeeder in the Lakes

Oh, and buy more Gore tex ๐Ÿ˜›

Second Stavely, lovely place with great beer, massive bike shop and a surprising amount going on for such a small place.

A few good trails on the other side of the Mg in the Howgills ๐Ÿ˜€ and further inland to N. Yorkshire Dales around Hawes etc.
You are only a couple of hrs down the road from some prime Stanes in D&G/Borders and Keilder is not that far away.

Yeh, I agree with this. Theres not really alot of good stuff to ride in the lakes, its definitely worth travelling further afield if you can.

I'd recommend getting yourself to Walney Island airport, only about a 45 minute drive from Kendal and from there you may be able to charter a flight to the Alps or Pyrenees

We do regular rides on a Wednesday night with the obligatory beer afterwards, see here: ridethelakes

Not ridden much locally in Kendal (I'm in Windermere) but from Staveley just up the road there's some quality riding and then obviously further up you have the whole of the Lakes to choose from ๐Ÿ˜€

Thought you'd be along soon Stu,plenty of different groups about, I dare say the Evans shop in Kendal does rides, along with Biketreks,Wheelbase etc etc.
I'd be surprised if you DON'T find someone to ride with.....

My ex worked in Kendal and said she didn't like the place which may well mean....... it's ok.

Cumbria in general.......... loads of nice people, loads of lovely riding, great countryside......... BUT expect a certain amount of corruption amongst...... solicitors/ local politicians-authorities-officials/police etc.

I live in Lancaster and Kendal is really nice. Would quite like to live there or Ulverston myself in the next couple of years. Makes riding in the Lakes just a bit closer and I think Kendal has a nicer feel that Lancaster

WTF! Really? My dad was a police man for 30 years, my mum worked for South Lakeland Distric Council for 15 years and I have done a 5 year stint on the Town Council. Could you clarify exactly what your saying?

Flipping heck, it's going to get busy there: I'll also be heading down soon. We are doubting between Kendal and Lancaster and will have a look in both places next week to see some different characteristics between the two. From what I had seen before i feel that Kendal may be a bit small, but we'll see!

Smuttie

Bit of an unfortunate name for someone who is denying corruption exists in Cumbria!!

AND yes I can justify that comment BY THE BLOODY BUCKETFULL. I could do about twenty pages worth from a standing start. I wish I couldn't, because I have found the various experiences I, and several of my neighbours have had, very depresssing.

If you and your family have missed it then you are fortunate.......... or blind.....or a mason.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt seeing as you are on here.... fortunate.

Not 100% sure what that is supposed to mean or even why I feel the need to respond but I will. My forum name is the same as every other forum I use. It is made up of 2 parts Smuttie and smith. Smuttie from my first cat as a child and Smith is my mothers maiden name. Some people may recognise the reasoning as being the porn star name game. First pets name plus mothers maiden name equals Porn star name

I trust that is ok with you but by all means let me know if not.

AND yes I can justify that comment BY THE BLOODY BUCKETFULL. I could do about twenty pages worth from a standing start. I wish I couldn't, because I have found the various experiences I, and several of my neighbours have had, very depresssing.

Please do not give me the benefit of your doubt. I have absolutely nothing to gain or lose from your opinion so save it.

Your statement regarding corruption would give rise the suspicion that it is a greater problem here than it is the rest of the country. I do not have any experience of corruption in other parts of the country so I cannot speak with authority on corruption in 'for example' the Manchester Police service so I wont. I only have my own personal to go on in the Town council, District council and the Police and I have never experienced any corruption. I would say with the positions I and my family have held we would be in a good position to witness some, but we haven't. Your experience is obviously different however I am intrigued by how your experience in Cumbria differs from elsewhere in the country? You must of been a busy boy to have a 'bloody bucket full' which would run to 20 pages.

PS I am not a Mason nor was my father. I know quite a few Masons though. They are just a regular bunch of guys who like knocking about together and sharing a drink. Like most mountain bikers except with out the weird compulsion to go out into the wet and muddy countryside and ride bikes in circles. Come to think of it I might just get my application in....

see you at the shop. night rides on a Weds night but BTreks rides tend to be higher numbers and most of the time are a funny pace (Andy rides like a nutter most of the time)

Hook up with SBarnes for bogtrotting, he seems to be out more than most on an evening i think.

As DaveT states though...its always possible to get a flight out to the Alps haha

I haven't done a night ride for ages - it got too blokey and gotta-getta-the-pub for my liking ๐Ÿ™‚ Also I've been plagued with cramp and wanted to save myself for the Saturday totty-fest :o)

There seems to be a lot of Ulverston riders on this here forum, and I don't know any of them by their forum personas, which is strange as I live in Ulverston, ride bikes and frequent this forum.

Ulverston-based riders... speak up! In which part of town do you live and what do you ride? I'll probably recognise the bikes even if I don't know the riders.

I'd suggest we hook up and go for a pedal, but The Wife is going to drop a child imminently, so it may be a little while before I can cycle again.

Stevestunts - I am up on Soutergate (not quite as far as The Old Friends, on t'other side of the road).

Not really been riding much yet, if you have seen me it would either be a black Yeti 575 or a blue Marin Rocky Ridge (I used to live on Monument Way, but moved!).

My girlfriend is in much the same position, but need to find some folk locally to start getting out and riding with, so long as they don't mind my slowness ๐Ÿ˜‰ To be honest, folk to go for a pint with wouldn't be a bad thing either!

Speaking of which, that's the only corruption I have noticed in Cumbria - a blatent disregard of licencing hours ๐Ÿ˜‰

You are traveling with your eyes wide shut.

With the Localism Bill coming up things will probably get even worse and I think you are going to have to buy eye patches if you want to continue ignoring it.

Nice to hear from some locals!, keep in touch and we'll get a small slow ride out sorted!

Ulverston-based riders... speak up! In which part of town do you live and what do you ride?

Spesh spenner....Swarthmoor.....i ride a Spesh FSR XC Pro, slowly and not very often!, i can often be seen tramping along the A590 on my trusty Trek road bike, on my way to work in the paper mill in Bazra. 5.30am starts.....ouch!!!
