[#4018782]

Right I am slowly coming round to the idea of tracking myself mainly due to playing with strava using my phone.

I want to log rides that is it. Ideally I want a device that has 10hrs battery life other features Im not fussed about. heart rate might be interesting

I am I correct in thinking the bottom of the line forerunner 50 would do the job.

Sorry I may be asking stupid questions but I have always shyed away from this sort of thing in the past so have no knowledge at all !

Unless you're into running I'd go for one of the more cycling specific ones like one of the Edge models.

the running ones will still log the route and give you time/distance/pace info as you go, though - i find my 210 more than enough to keep me informed on the bike. honestly one of my favourite ever biking purchases.

Edge 500 does all of the above. I got an 800 which came with a HRM. wasnt fussed about it but finding it very handy, stops me red-lining.

The Forerunner 50 does not have GPS. It is basically just a stopwatch and heart rate monitor. Though it will log your speed/distance if you have a speed/cadence sensor.

For a Garmin for logging a track, I recommend the Foretrex 301. It has decent battery life (about 18 hours), and uses AAA batteries, so you can take a few spares if necessary. Or the Foretrex 401 if you want heart rate/cadence.

If you just want tracking, maplin (and probably DX or ebay too) do GPS trackers which will log your track for hours, then you can upload it to a PC.

The Edge series aren't much more than the foreunners and are cycling specific rather than running. The 200 is just a cycling computer, the 500 is a very good cycling computer and the 800 does everything + mapping. I've a 305 which is good as a cyling computer and the breadcrumb trail style navigation is supprisingly usefull if you zoom in to ~100m so junctions become obvious, as long as you suplement it with a propper OS map for actual navigation.

I don't really want to spend a huge amount of money when I have a phone that does the same thing (almost)

The attraction of a forerunner is that its a watch and therefore no brackets and less fathing

all I want to do is track where Ive been and at what speed. Which I can then link to STRAVA

Sounds like I should be OK with a forerunner

on that basis i can't recommend the 210 enough - got a decent price off amazon. i think the 110 does mostly the same but without current pace, or something like that?

Just get a battery pack/case for your phone then? Should manage 10hr with that. (Mine seems to eat around 10-15% battery per hour when using Endomondo)

Just googled gps logger, seems to be lots intended for tracking kids/pets or just plain old fassioned stalking for about £25.

Mine has just gone back to Garmin this week with exactly the same problem (except that mine lasted 10 months). It would power on if I connected it to the mains, but the power button has no effect at all.

I went straight to Garmin rather than returning it to Wiggle and was hoping for a swift replacement, though according to the RMA tracking they're still waiting for me to return it despite it arriving at Garmin on Monday morning.

Although, to be fair, having just checked the status again, it now says 'awaiting shipping' 🙂

I have always found Garmin support to be good in the past and hopefully this will continue!

I love my edge 800, it's amazing how much watching your HR, cadence etc actually helps / improves your riding.

I probably dont use the satnav as much as I should, and may have got away with a 500... But you never know.

The problem with the forerunner 405cx which I have is the battery life and gps receiver are shit.
It frequently loses signal and the battery doesn't last a good ride.
I would get a basic edge cycle specific one 305 etc.

If you are only looking for basic functions then there are others that might work just as well. Holux and Bryton spring to mind.

Picked up an Edge 200 today - charged it in the office, stuck it on the bike for the commute home, all the controls simple and easy to figure out after a quick glance of the owners manual (yes, I am very in touch with my feminine side), and does all I want it to do for just over £100.

It doesn't do heart rate but battery claimed to last 14 hrs

Actually cost £105 due to a very helpful assistant in Evans trying their "sale10" on line voucher that wasn't valid for Garmin when I tried it - the shop system accepted it and gave the discount.

Think Winstanleys have it at £103?

This happened to mine too but after only two weeks. I had a new unit from Garmin after less than a week though. Very happy with mine so far.

Handtec are usually the cheapest place for Garmin - I got an Edge 500 with HRM for £170 - they list the 200 for £103, but don't currently have stock.

Just ordered an Edge 200 which does all the basics. The next one up has a few extra features and ANT+ technology but it's an extra £50. Depends on your budget though and how you want it to help you

Freeborn do the edge 200 for £103.99 or cycle surgery will price match (which is where I got mine).

I use a Garmin Fore Runner 205 ( http://www8.garmin.com/products/forerunner205/) wrapped round the handle bar instead of a bike computer. I have it display speed, distance and stop watch. It records the route and then you can get all your stats afterwards. I really like it, got no complaints what so ever. I'm a paper OS map kind of guy so not really interested in a GPS with maps. BTW the 305 is the one with the heart rate monitor.
