I was fitting a Fox shock last night and I discovered that with a DU bush in the lower eyelet the swingarm/linkage bolt will not fit. With the DU removed its a snug/good close fit. As though it was designed this way.
Things to note:
The shock came off a same era Enduro.
The frame doesn't have a yoke etc- its all standard FSR linkage.
The only other thing I can think of is the shock eyelet on the SX is custom with a wider outer eyelet to enable a DU bush to fit.
Of course running a shock without a DU bush runs the risk of ovalising the shock itself but everything is tight/firm. As though it was 'designed'(?) this way.
You won't ovalise anything if you have the right conical spacers in.
Check/Yes.
This is the sort of thing I do.
1) Buy a bargin
2) spend hours and money trying to bodge stuff together to fit it.
3) reach the conclusion that buying something that was complete would have been both easier and cheaper.
Nah...This is the sort of thing I normally do:
Buy something, adapt it. Realise that I'm shit at improving things.
but never learn.
but never learn.
me neither.
Fun isn't it ๐
Definitely. When I win the lottery I'm going to power the **** out of a boggo Citroen C1- everyting done - discs/suspension/engine super or turbo charged but it look completely 100% standard on the outside 8)
should have cup and cone spacers either side of the shock which clamp the sides of the shock and allow it to rotate/pivot - nice design, should take out sideload due to any misalignment. if you don't already have it, see parts 1m and 1n in the exploded diagram at end of manual:

BTW- every good bike mechanic should have a clawhammer in their toolbox binners..
my 05 enduro has no DU bushing in the lower shock eyelet. And no wear after 5 years of use.
You learn something every day - although it's testament to the design that I haven't had to tamper in this area on either of my SX's
I do remember on mine when we decided to switch the shock shuttle round, that getting the shock in and out was a bit of a headache. I believe it took two of us, a number of beers and one of us restraining the other after the big mallet had been reached for ๐
It is a massive pain in the balls!
There is no DU bushing in that end. The cone washers a a ball to hold in the right position to get the shock in, you can't put them in after the shock is already in position. Your best bet is to put the frame in a stand with nothing bolted on to the swingarm, put a shed load of grease on the cone washers to hold them in place then thread the shock through the frame into place. I honestly can't think how they could make a more difficult way of fitting a shock.
Does anyone know where I can get the parts 1.m and 1.n in the link above?
Install with a smaller diameter bolt, and push the 'real' bolt through?
I'm sure I had to do this with my 06 Enduro.
pomona have you tried specialized uk?
Failing that I'm sure TF and Mojo had to machine some to fit different shocks on the 05 Enduro so they might have some. The 05 Enduro came with a 5th Air that had a different width eyelet so different spacers were needed for the Fox shocks that most people wanted/needed to put on.
Hi there, recently bought a 2010 DHX Air for my 2005 enduro expert (only shock that has the same dimensions 8.75x2.5). Unfortunately having this same problem of the lower eyelet not fitting with the bolt and bushing. Took it to the LBS hoping they could get something from Fox or Specialized, no luck, and they said it was a bit too big without the bushing in the eyelet. Also he said the the spacing of the lower eyelet is too big for the space between the cone bushings. Am I completely out of luck? Thanks!
Has Hora sold the frame already, to Josh?
Not sure what you mean b r. I'm questioning this thread hoping to find a solution to the shock issue, I know nothing of a frame being purchased
No, see here.

Take the bushing out you don't need it due to the cone washers. 05 frames originally had 5th Element shocks fitted and these had a narrower lower mount width. Fox and RS shocks are wider so the original cone washers are too thick. This sounds like your problem.
When the 5th shocks broke which was often people normally upgraded to Fox shocks and obviously these didn't fit. Because of this TF Tuned and Mojo used to carry thinner cone washers to sell to customers along with their new shocks. Give these places a ring or even Specialized UK as they might still have some left over. Or might even be able to make some up for you.
I'm sure when I swapped out the 5th element shock on my enduro to a dhx I had to get thinner cone washers or something and I believe tf tuned do them!
Wow, this truly makes sense to me, thank you. I emailed Mojo, as I live in Canada it'd be hard to ring them. Hopefully they get back soon.
Helpful tip for putting it all back together- cut a snug fitting bolt fractionally shorter than the width of the assembled cones to hold it all in place when squeezing it into it's mounting slot, then tap it out prior to fitting the correct bolt.
Just a thought. As your in Canada why not try giving Push a ring. They will probably be able to sort you out and most likely at a cheaper price.
Thanks a lot, emailed Push in Colorado, hopefully they'll get back to me or can direct me somewhere. This is great thanks so much everyone that's helped, I thought I'd have to sell the shock!
Hey again, I got in touch with many companies (Mojo, OGC, and Push). Recently got in my package from Push which I though would be the cone washers but instead was the DU bushings and some more hardware that' unfamiliar to me. I emailed asking what was up and they said that all of this hardware fits into the eyelet and will work but to give them a call. I also got in contact with OGC recently and they said they have the reducers in stock. Not sure what to do at this point, is there two ways the shock can be installed? It is a frustrating process to say the least.
Tick will reply when back at P.C
Im sure I bought some slimmer cone spacers from specialized when i removed the 5th elephant shock and fitted the fox coil!
I definitely had some smaller washers but I can't remember who from the above list I got them from.
Alternatively go to a machine shop with current washers and both shocks and ask them to remove the difference (between the shock widths) form the washers.
