http://www.hexcel.com/Resources/Brochures

The top link "A world of composite technologies" has plenty of info in on carbon fibre. Not sure how much use it would be but they produce the carbon for trek.

Various sites have info on how they make bikes

http://www.velocite-bikes.com/carbon-fiber.html.html

https://www.ibiscycles.com/support/technical_articles/metallurgy_for_cyclists/the_basics/

If you google there are probably more. Boutique brands are always keen to tell you why their material is better.

Impress his teachers with a peer reviewed research paper! These should be relevant:

A lot of those probably aren't free. But just search for the papers title followed by 'pdf'. 9/10 you'll find the paper for free somewhere.
