[#10738770]

Red Bull just popped a video clip in my Facebook feed of two riders doing a back flip at the same time, which is TBH mightily impressive, but the title POV tandem backflips made me think it was actually two blokes on the one tandem bike.

Has this ever been attempted? Are any of the current crop of freeriders brave/stupid enough?

I'm not sure ...but I'd love to see Danny Mac and Martyn Ashton backup that custom Tandem they use.

You would have to be pretty crazy to try! Not sir wits possible tbh and the crashes would be horrible.

Pretty sure a backflip would be impossible, but a barrel roll might be doable

The normal physics of a backflip just wouldn't apply would they?

You'd need the rider on front to be super light but able to produce some sort of massive 'pump' off the lip, and to be running some crazy rebound on their forks. Meanwhile the stoker would need to super heavy and sink like a stone as soon as they are airborne so that the lighter guy up front can sort of 'orbit' around him?

Also I guess if the front rider was able to unweight/pump at the bottom of the upslope, the stoker could put in some sort of crazy sprint up the remainder of the upslope, sort of forcing the rear of the bike under the front?

All of the above written as someone who could never jump or has never ridden a tandem. Would be amazing to see it done!

See, we're making progress already!

the stoker could put in some sort of crazy sprint up the remainder of the upslope, sort of forcing the rear of the bike under the front?

Maybe an e-tandem would help here. Also adding weight to the back of the bike to help the 'orbiting' process.

TJ, did you ever try mounting that Bafang kit to your tandem? Do you have access to a massive foam pit?

Well if we're talking powered assistance then what they obviously need is some sort of jerry-rigged jet boost on the back to assist with the 'orbitting' process.

I'm picturing a sort of catherine wheel effect with two screaming riders in the middle...

It's extremely hard to lift the front of a tandem at the best of times. You'd need silly speed and a carefully angled ramp. But the laws of Physics still apply. So yes it is possible, but no I don't think anyone would me foolish enough to try. But then... Red Bull!

Seen it doubled up on motorcycles, but they are 1) more powerfull and 2) had a shorter wheelbase for pivoting.

I used to have a short wheelbase 2 wheeler, could do ace stoppies but a bunny hop would be a bit tricky.

If you made the wheels offset and got the front to use a different ramp from the rear?

Would a front flip be easier?

With a pal of mine we managed to get my tandem bunnyhopping quite impressively with two of us aboard it.

Have attempted a flip into a foam pit with a friend hanging on to my shoulders in a piggy bag. Did not end well

By tandem you me a conventional one...

Could you not stagger the riders to get the wheel base shorter?
