Just bought a new Specialized Tricross disc. Feels nice and stiff out of the saddle and cornering but not uncomfortable. Slower than the roadie though, as you'd expect. I'm planning some winter epics over mixed tarmac and forest track/bridleway and using it with mudguards as a winter trainer. It should be good in snow too with the narrow tyres digging down for grip and the disc brakes.

It comes with Avid BB5s so I have ordered a set of BB7s from CRC and will flog the 5s on Eblag. I don't anticipate any problems at all with the swap but.... the Tricross has a 160mm disc front and 140mm rear and I would prefer both to be 160mm.

How do the BB brakes accommodate the difference in disc diameter? Is a different shaped adaptor used?

Do the venerable members of this forum think I'll be able to Ebay the BB5s with the 160/140mm discs set? Or am I better flogging the 2 x 160mms that will come with the BB7s?

I'd stick with the rotors you have, should then be able to swap the callipers straight over.

IMO a BB7 will easily lock a 32 tyre.

Should be able to swap the calipers straight over but the BB7s come with inline barrel adjusters where as the BB5s don't (adjuster is part of the caliper). This means you are going to have to cut some cable outer to fit the adjuster in and also thread the cable through. Personally I found it easier just to buy 2 new cables for the job because threading a cut cable through the outers always ends up fraying it!

BB7 kits come with rotors anyway so just spec the rotor sixe, swap and you're good to go with whichever size suits.
