How good/bad for cycling? Looks like it would have a few HGVs on it due to the ferry, so are there any times (day or night) that would be better/less stressful?

Ha….Ha…..Ha…..Ha…. Don't even consider it and as for less stressful?, buy a rowing boat, throw your bike into it and paddle up the coastline, even at this time of year with winter storms you have more chance of survival at sea.

I wouldn't. I've never seen a bike on it before apart from the Milk race that they used to have every year at Girvan. Plenty back roads.

I've got to agree with soma - a really bad road to cycle. I drive on it frequently heading to the ferry and I cannot imagine cycling on it being any fun! Ferry traffic is pretty much 24 hour too so I don't really think there is a quiet time.

I was brought up there though I dont quàlify as a local any more. You're best to avoid the A77 if you can.
