Hi,
I'm about to build a Surly Cross Check, with older Shimano 3x8 LX groupset (the black series, 560s). But I have a new CX70 brakeset... in ice gray. Do you think the modern cantilever brakes are huge improvement? Worth to mix the groupsets (and colours)?
Thanks in advance!

Cantis will never be disc brakes performance but they can give good performance. I prefer ones with stud style bricks as although they are more of a pain to setup you can get more adjustment of the mechanical advantage. Block and rim choose is also important as is cable prep (true for all cables but even more so when the dealing with cantis).

I've got some to go on my hewitt cheviot. I went from older shimao cantis to vee brakes with travel agents. They weren't great either with a fully loaded tourer so I'll give the new cantis a go

Which cantis would you like to try?

I've got CX70'S with SwissStop pads. Great in the dry, good in semi wet and average in the wet. A doddle to set up too - no rubbing or squealing.

I've had Avid Shorty Ultimates, CR720's, Oryx, BR550's. The CX70'S have been the best I've had but still not as good as a V brake, not far off though.

Using 105 levers if it makes a difference.

Do you know any brake levers (for straight bars) in the same colour (ice grey) as cx70 brakes?

I used to have CX70's now have mini-v's, it's night and day different.

I'm sure there's a canti whispering genius on the forum that'll tell me I set them up wrong, but I'm sticking with my assertion that cantis were left in the very early 90s for a reason.

I have a Surly cross-check. It has CX-70s. I could never get them to brake properly for more than about a day, after which they would be back to being terrible.

I try to avoid riding it now.

Mini vee's won't clear mudguard on my bike which is why I tried proper vee's. Might try them without the travel agent just to see. Pulling with a campag veloce drop bar lever
