Support your local bike shop the sign says outside Swinnertons on Cannock Chase

[img] [/img]

I went in,

I asked "Have you got any hope 2009 quick releases in gold or silver?" - No only red, black or last years models at the same price.

I then asked "Have you got any chamois cream?" - No, you'd be better off with Sudocrem from Boots

Finally they must have this, I asked "Have you got an inner tube for a 29er" - No there's not much call for them.

So I bought a 26" 2.5 inner tube hoping it will stretch in an emergency and they fleeced me for £6.

Six bloody quid it's half that everywhere else.

Rant over and off to Chain Reaction

If you had read the poster (you probably couldn't see it on your high horse) you'd have noticed that it is not aimed at getting your business away from CRC but a making sure that a newbie or a kids bike is not bought from Halfords or somewhere worse.

Oh and CRC haven't got ANY 2009 Hope QR's, so yeah you should support your local neighbourhood bike shop as they are better stocked than the mail order place with low overheads, no coffee and haven't got any staff who actually ride bikes.

I never stray from my LBS. They haven't got any Hope QRs,no chamois cream and probably no 29er inner tubes.....but they will always help to get my bike ready for the next ride, always offer honest and helpful advice and there's always fresh coffee brewing.

I think the lbs becomes a lot less attractive to those that can & do all their own maintenance

No disused railways around the Chase way so go play your clown bike else where.

Swinnos is a top shop an if your a member of Chase trails 15% off everything and free tea/coffee.

Poor rant and totally out of order, go tubeless dummy 🙄

Bike in Bristol didn't have what I wanted either.

But they have really good service and didn't fob me off. I'd rather wait for them to get my part in rather than a shop I won't name that has realy shoddy service, rude and aggressive.

At least you got an inner tube and you should buy the stuff before you get there next time.

I have 6 LBS now :O)

risky game, i made the mistake of being irritated by my LBSs "excessive" prices once upon a time, and got a strongly worded letter from the manager.

he still hates me.

Not the best complaint in the world ever is it? Coupla quid over the odds for a tube (possibly) No arse cream! (ffs whats wrong with you?)
No Hope QR's did you need them right there and then? Could they have ordered them in for you? did you ask?

They cant stock everything can they? Have thousands upon thousands of pounds tied up in stock on the off chance you walk in.

🙄

Umm... How big is Swinno's shop? How much stuff do you expect them to have in at any one time?

And how big do you think CRC's warehouse is?

-1/10 😉

IMHO LBS are useless for planned purchases - its the unplanned ones where they come into their own. In the last year alone in mine I've found: latest XTR dual control levers for £25 new and boxed (!!!!), Shimano R099 road shoes for £25 ditto, and a complete early 90's Kona Explosif for £100...

Arse cream? never seen it in my lbs, they were obviously just doing you a favour by pointing you toward boots. Between that and the 29er tube they probably twigged that you were a bit of a wierdo and decided to ask you for a tube at £6 as a joke which you took seriously, probably because you are a humorless arrogant arse, much loved by bike shop staff.

The more I think about it, the more I want to support my lbs. Do we really want to get to the stage when the only place where we can see bikes before we buy them is on the internet?

Bike shops are full of wonderful characters and good atmos...and if you don't agree you just need to try another that caters to dicks....they are out there. Oh yes.

CRC did some pretty dubious things to get where they are, and yes their warehouses are vast. Sure, you might save a few quid by shopping at crc but what are you getting in return other than the product you purchased? what are you putting back? (Edited for mindless unsubstantiated near racist nonsense and possibly libellous bile. Your entitled to your opion but there is no need to unpleasant.Mod)By shopping at your local shop you are supporting local business, supporting jobs in your community, supporting your local economy and supporting the british cycle industry. The more we shop at our lbs the better they will do, and we will all benefit accordingly.

Top service from Skyline Cycles.

I went into my LBS to get my esoteric frame's bushings serviced, and remembering that the BB was a bit naff I asked 'who could get a cheaper replacement Royce BB, you or me' Very honestly Steve said that I could. And then Kev, the world's best spannerman piped up that all that was needed was to replace the bearings in the lovely Ti lump that I have. So they did it for me. And thus I saved a huge load of cash as I didn't previously know that Royce BB's had replaceable bearings. Two years for a BB is pretty good though...

i think most of my feelings have been dealt with by the other realists out there.....i cant remember crc shaking a hand, making a coffee for a cold roadie, speaking enthusiastically about the new whatever(and then selling it!) making way for the emergency repair that means any customer that needs it can ride the next day....

crc are great for some people im sure but most of my customers seem to appreciate what we do for them.....

Yes I realised my grammatical error on reading after posting but I didn't think the Pedantic Taliban would mind!

I'm sorry it won't happen again 😉

""Have you got any hope 2009 quick releases in gold or silver?" - No only red, black or last years models at the same price."

"No, but we have a heliotrope with diamante crusting." How different is last year's model of seatclamp?

"I then asked "Have you got any chamois cream?" - No, you'd be better off with Sudocrem from Boots"

Yup, you ever used Sudocrem? It'll turn a raisin back into a grape. And be cheaper than that there chamois cream.

"Finally they must have this, I asked "Have you got an inner tube for a 29er" - No there's not much call for them." What's a 29er?

"So I bought a 26" 2.5 inner tube hoping it will stretch in an emergency and they fleeced me for £6." Hmmm... Emergency. Lack of planning on your part there buddy.

My LBS are happy to order stuff for me and they get it in quick too. I appreciate they cant stock lots of different high end or niche products that are not often sold. As I always shop with them I get a discount too...

What they can do is give good service and honest advice. Sudocrem is great!

OP - chill eh? You only get one life, and these half witted rants don't make this forum a cheery place. In fact I would go so far as to say that it would be better were there less of them.

Be happy, go out and do a nice deed. Hug a tramp. Reset the karmic imbalance in your life, and share your love and happiness on the forum instead. Or something.

Thats why he needed cream?

I'd expect them to have a 29'er if they are a mtb specialist.

Hope QR's? well thats money on shelf -mail order specialists?

Cream? I'd expect that but in recession times-sell what sells!

I think he is silly with some things like Hope QR's but he has a point with the other gear.

If the shop never sells that gear due to zero demand then they won't stock it.

Nah, trust me there's worse than Swinnertons...oh yes....hell yes...much much worse...
You could have gone to Grahams Cycles... 🙂

Have to say I've found Swinnertons to be ok, if a little pricey, but they have a trail side location to include in their mark-up.

"Two years isn't bad for a bottom bracket"
You think?. My LBS fitted an RF Signature ISIS BB in a Hummer for me in 2003. Eighteen months later they replaced the bearing, for eight quid. A couple of years ago said BB went into an Inbred frame, where it's still happily spinning away. Six years and counting is my idea of a good BB. Oh, and good installation, which makes a difference. The LBS is John's Bikes in Bath, BTW.
