Trying to eat more "natural" food and save money at the same time, I've been trying out some of my local supermarket's offerings to provide energy for longer rides. Looking for a decent amount of carbs (60-70%) with preferably a low proportion of basic sugars, plus low fat to aid quick digestion (>4%?). Maybe a bit of protein too?
Obviously malt loaf and fig rolls are great, but what else do you use?
i like the cherry kellogs oat bake bar things, no idea if they're good for you or not! Bit like a soft cherry flapjack. About 200cals per bar, they keep me going on long rides
Jelly Babies!
Bananas of course.
Dried fruit - apricots are good cause you can squash them down. 'Nanas and nuts too. Mmmmmm!
I like those Rice Krispies Squares things- not any more 'natural' but cheaper!
Sainsbury's have packets of trail mix (peanuts, raisins, choc chips)*, difficult to eat on the go though.
*Obviously you could do this cheaper still yourself.
I don't really look at the nutritional values very often but I eat, bananas and whatever cereal bars are on offer during the week. At the minute it's nutrigrain and the other kellogs things.
If you want high protein after the ride then I can recommend the wholefoods 9 bars.
Tesco own brand flap jack, nice and soft and it's only about 75pence a pack. About 3 or 4 rides worth.
Make your own flapjack. Easy and cheap.
Haribo's and a Banana usually come with me in the Camelbak
Sugar cubes wrapped in scrambled egg
My Mrs has taken to baking some (Bran) apple tea bread (loads of recipes on web) - it's yummy and definitely works, it keeps you going on the ride and when I get home I no longer feel the need to instantly eat about 2000 calories of pretty much anything that comes to hand
Jelly Babies
Jelly cubes (the stuff you normally melt to make, erm, jelly)
Tesco Value Flapjack
Dried apricots/figs
Kellogs Nutrigrain
Kellogs Squares
Banana
Garibaldis, they are lush and easy to carry!
Loads of ideas there, thanks! I tend to steer clear of dried apricots due to issues with wind... and peanut butter cups are just horrible (imho of course).
Got some "Planet Lunch" fruit and oat bars and some squeezable fruit sachets (like a concentrated smoothie) half price from Sainsburys yesterday, won't be hungry for a while... 🙂
home made fruit and nut, banana and chocolate flapjacks mmmmmmmmm
slightly less good and cheap, but easier.... morrisons own brand jelly babies
Sesame seed bars, OK quite a high proprotion of basic sugars, but they're v cheap, v transportable in their natty little packets, v light weight and keep you going well enough.
Jaffa Cakes are pretty decent for carbs, IIRC
Ella's Kitchen Organic baby breakfast (the banana ones are yummy)
jam sarnie, brown bread
baguette with mozzerella and tomatoes in tinfoil. Mega squashable but tasty.
Homemade flapjack
marmite and bread
mars bar medium size
snickers med size
carrots
peanuts
Carmens museli bars aussie made great
chocolate raisins
instant hit plus carbs and you can abuse them!
cheap at a lidl near you
pork pie?
"Tesco Value Flapjack"
A bit too fatty for my taste. Malt loaf is my fav.
Tesco value malt loaf, 28p, 500Kcal+ and packs flat.
What more do you need? 😆
The Nature Valley range of bars is very near to your target carb to sugar ratio. Typically , as the most carby , they are also the most expensive at C £2.10 for 6 , 2 bar packs. The canadian maple syrup ones are yummy if not a tad dry.
PB and J Bagels are also near ish to your carb to sugar ratio. Typically , its pasta tht has a bit of protein, and a shed load of carbs but it really cannot be made into a bar . Lasagna sheet pasta sandwiches anyone?
