I have to say, I've had a few bits from them. Pedals, kevlar pads and drop out spacers and had no issue with any of it.

Don't like them, no, but appreciate them for their cheapness despite their "customer service". Still seem to find myself on their side of threads here when the school bullies come out and people start mentioning octopi though.

Ai, that's how much I wouldn't wish their kit on him 😆

I'd rather shop at David Hinde*

(*nah they're in the same boat as each other)

The kit has always worked fine and I always recommended it. But I spoke to the lad who runs the company at a bike show, he asked me what I thought and I told him it works well. At this point he started a tirade of abuse against all the people who say bad things about superstar.

He came off as a total asshat and I no longer buy superstar.

Interesting summary of a thread that was mostly positive 😕

Pedals, most definitely yes. 😀
Front 20mm hub and rear 150x12mm hub, absolutely fine although I built the wheels myself!
Aerozine headset, hmmmmmmmm.....
Disc rotor, mmmm, ok.
Pads, 50% have been fine, not so much the others.
HT2 BB, rather predictably short-lived.
SS 17t cog , great!

Overall 'yes' though. And all of the above were bought because they were the cheapest of what was needed at the time, and all arrived the next day without exception.

As I remember a dozen or so replys and 3(???) faulty wheelsets?

I wouldn't consider that to be very positive.

Edit - not even a dozen folk with the wheels

tj, start a thread on hope brakes and a significant number of the replies will be people moaning about them too. Doesn't mean they aren't ace, just that satisfied people are less likely to bother moaning about their kit on the internet.
[edit] 9 positives versus 4 negatives or less-than-positive comments on the SSC wheels thread^^ You'll get far worse odds on pretty much any brake or tyre thread IME.

Only had one thing off them myself - a 16t single speed cog - that the owner guy gave me at MM, works fine and dandy.

My mates pedals are fine too

I've just ordered a XCR Single Ring Chainguide the product seems fine & is pretty easy to install, however it'd've been nice to either receive instructions or be able to find some online...

Never had a problem except for a delaminated pad about two, maybe three years ago. Apart from that, great value, and I'm loving my new stem from them.

In fairness, I've never felt a brand new cartridge-bearing hub that didn't feel smooth.

Doesn't mean the hubs aren't half decent though, how do they compare to pro2's weight-wise?

i have

kevlar and sintered pads, multiple pairs in multiple bikes with varying amounts of usage/frequency

plasma chain device

another DH chain device

pair of wheels with mavic rims

several tools including the ball ended allen keys

tyre patches

NOTHING has broken/fallen apart/caught on fire or expired before a fair usage time.

i will continue to use superstar as do most others - they are cheap, swift to deliver and their kit works,

as a footnote most people realise that it's not the owner building and manufacturing these products and as such he/they are as open to problems with batches poor builds etc. The difference is there gear is always cheap. Having not had any experience of his customer service after purchase i cant comment on that, but that is because all the stuff i've had/use works faultlessly.

I like the gear. I buy their pads and the seatpost clamp is a great little bit of kit. I will continue to buy the stuff as it works for me and it's good value.

I have a set of their wheels, a chainguide and various other tools and little bits. I have always been happy with the kit and the delivery service is great...however, I have never had to return anything so I don't know what their customer service is like.

I have. The positives outweigh the negatives.

I've also heard loads of good things about SSC from 'real' people, and hardly anything negative. Likewise, people have had problems with all sorts of other brands but you don't hear so much about that. I've experienced 5 or 6 freehub failures with Shimano hubs over the last few years, but you don't hear loads of people slagging off Shimano like they do SSC, do you? I woon't buy Shimano hubs again, but I don't bang on about how terrible the company is. Loads of their other products are great.

You really do need to get over Rockgate...

I refer you to my previous post tj.

To remind you: people are less inclined to post up about things they had no problem with than have a moan. I am puzzled by the amount of folk who I hear moan about hope brakes. I even have a friend who has given up on his hopes in favour of elixirs. (really!) This does not mean they are bad brakes, it means people moan about them on internet forums.

But you know that already. Self selecting samples and axes to grind, anyone who posts on the internet on a daily basis knows that.

The rule with Superstar seems to be don't buy anything with bearings in, they will die very quickly! Had an HT2 BB off them with SKF bearings in, still died after only about 10 rides!

Grips are pretty decent for the money though, pads from those I know use them all seem ok since the bad batch a couple of years ago.

Got an XCR singe ring chain device too recently, back plate is a little thin and flimsy, but it seems to work ok, even if ive had to bend it a couple of times back into shape.

Elf - learn to count. 10 people on that thread had real experience of the wheels, 5 had issues ( although some thought cheapness meant early failure was acceptable).

Julian - yes you are correct - however the failure rate is far too high IMO even allowing for the effect you mention.

I simply fail to understand how anyone can find this level of quality acceptable (as in mboys post above)- OK for the price? Or buy cheap buy twice?

Ok - I should have kept out and will do now.

tj....how do we, the lay-people really know about the failure rate of any bike product?

There may be high failure rates elsewhere whose 'folk moaning on the internet' rates are exacerbated or reduced by customer service experience. ...which is where you may have a point about ssc of course, but then we are dealing with a company (well, bloke to be honest, I love the way small startups always refer to themselves with the royal 'we' or as a 'team' 😆 ) that operates almost completely by mail order with it's own products rather than a bricks and mortar or indeed internet shop referring back to an importer's warranty department.

The only setups you could realistically compare ssc to in terms of the reliability and customer experience in internet-only sales of (largely) its own bike products is mtb-direct or On-One. [edit] and then only the on-one and planet x branded 'catalogue parts' and their wheel builds. Frames and bikes would be a whole other kettle of fish i'd have thought. [/edit]

Ok -

nano pedals - fantastic
chain devices - great
quick releases - great
pads - great
foam grips - great
lockons - ok
bottom bracker - 2 rides, not collapsed yet
crest/evo wheelset - basically fell apart after 2 rides due to shocking build and I had to rebuild, ok now but have a flat spot

I will buy from them again but not a wheelset

If its any consolation, out of 5 wheels from Merlin, two have seriously lost tension too, so there isn't much in it based on that. I'd buy the wheels again, based on the price.

I got a super cheap Subzero XC/AM Wheelset (£90 iirc) last autumn as a set to use during the winter, they've held up fine and haven't needed any more care than other cheap wheels.

The antics on this forum did put me off but the price made it worth a punt I felt

I've got various (mostly smaller) bits from them. Can't fault them for brake pads, grips, etc. A lot of it is obviously aimed at MBUK readers though (ugly/tacky).

Like many, my wheelset from them was pretty poorly built, but v.cheap. I guess the moral of that is to avoid stuff they've actually had a hand in, unless you know what you're doing.

used pads for some years and no probs

bottom bracket (aerozine skf) is best I have had in ten years on three bikes

would buy both again without hesitation and probably other stuff, although might be nervous about more expensive items, but that is about mail order generally...

I have loads of their stuff, I had an engagement ring go on my ss rear hub - they replaced it - it now works, no cost to me!

Edit - Should just point out it was very very very well used and I offered to pay!!

I think they are as good as any small bike shop - just a big chunk cheaper, and not on my doorstep! (although, I have never got any sweets from my LBS 😉 )

I have some very pretty black nano pedals with gold pins for my new bike 🙂 Not tried them yet as I fell off a couple of weeks ago (different pedals!) and can't ride yet. They sure look purty tho 🙂

I feel there has to be a quality control issue there, as mine has lasted 12 rides before it has seized, and now I've come to remove it from the frame, the stupidly shallow indents in the soft monkey metal, have rounded out! I'm gonna have to remove the bloody thing with a pipe wrench now...

Hi all,

a very quick line I heard a while ago... 'sell a good product & the buyer may tell one about the experience, sell one that's not so good & the buyer will tell everyone they know' on the internet that can be a lot of folk.

I have bought Kevlar pads: mint
sintered pads: mint
XCR device: got an email saying it was dispatched yesterday, today I got an email saying it's out of stock? Hmmm. Dave at Tibolts is a nice chap & helps how he can.

I think that we should all support Superstar, they're one of those companies that should get praise for; dare I say it... keeping it real?

stay safe everyone. 😉

Pads great
BB OK
Rims great
Front Hub great
Rear hub slightly ropey (superleggera - bearings getting a bit noisy, a bit too early)
Wheel build great

Sertainly no worse than the more expensive kit from other places, so I'll continue to buy their stuff.

Bottom bracket was poor, it seized solid after a wet ride. But had plenty of stuff since & its been spot on. Likewise the delivery & the one occasion I needed an order sorting out after I'd stuffed it up.

Brake pads
Rotors
Grips
Headset
9mm front QR
10mm rear QR
crest/switch evo wheelset

All been spot on. The wheelset has been on the bike for six months, done over 2000 miles now (I have the luxury of an 8 mile off road commute, I love going to work 😀 ) they've been battered round trail centres, jumped, dropped etc. still true, never had to touch them.

I've had very good experiences with them.

Brake pads and pedals excellent.

BB OK

Tools good for the money - they are ridiculously cheap, so I wasn't expecting Park quality.

Had good customer service when needed as well.

The rule with Superstar seems to be don't buy anything with bearings in, they will die very quickly!
having never been one to adhere to rules let me tell you their ISIS BBs is easily the best I've ever used, Race Face/FSA last no time (on DH bikes) before they'd have play in them, the Superstar one is solid and spun freely for a few years now (on a mini DH bike)

Haven't used much else Superstar sell other than:

nanos - great shape/weight/price pedals albeit at the expense of slightly weaker axles than I'd like (they do have strong cage/bodies tho and replacement axles cost little and take minutes to switch over). Got HTs too which were even cheaper.

disc pads - no complaints with their various Sintered pads. been using them for years (pre, during and after the STW "OMG you wil die if you use SS pads era"). their Avid springs need bending to shape tho (common fault with many aftermarket pads)

been using them for the past 4 years , with no probs at all ,use there pads no probs, looking at a few more bits and bobs, i have mavic rims on my orange they are always going out of true,so it dose happen to other brands.

I've got a DH wheelset and the Flows on Switch wheelset. Maybe been out half a dozen times on the Flows and they seem to be spot on still. DH has been seriously underused so only been out once or twice but took a whole uplift day with no problems and I'm no lightweight.

Been a few little things that I thought could have been dealt with better on the customer service side, but no real complaints so far about the wheels, pads, grips, pedals or other bits and pieces I've bought from them.

Will keep buying from them and keep fingers crossed not to have to return something to really try out the customer service.
