I'll shortly beable to ride virtually door to door along the Leeds/Liverpool canal to work and back.
I'm wanting a reasonably cheap, but lightweight bike that I can belt along the towpath on, the significance of the canal being it's completely flat, door to door.
I'm thinking rigid forks, not many gears, probably only need one brake, mudguards, chainguard (maybe).
Thing is, I don't want a drop handlebar racer, possibly I'd consider a fixie, but I'd rather build something MTB derived so I could reuse/mix the parts of/with my existing bikes.
Has anyone any ideas about what nice forks and frame I could get (light as possible but reasonable price)?. Also, what are the lightest tyres on the market?. What set up of gears would be best?.
Marin Muirwoods with guards and stuff added on.
plenty of gears so you can do other stuff at the weekend.
i bet you'll get loads of punctures...
Go for a 29er. Nice large wheels to smooth out surface imperfections, excellent off-road with appropriate tyres, fast. Ticks all the boxes I recon. If you fit something like a Bonty Jones XCR you wouldn't really need to change tyres, they're pretty light, they roll fast and they have enough tread for decent offroad performance. Put a good latex in and thorns aren't an issue, either. They are what I have on my 26er SS, and they get used on Tarmac, towpaths, and all-round XC type duties. Not much cop on serious mud, but then, what is?
Why not get a boat?

Giant Glory ? ๐
cannondale badboy 700
juicy 3's

and the frame will happily take 26" knobblies for some rigid off road fun.
shaved 20mins off my first commute ride compared to my orange 5
