Trying to take a sq taper bb out of the pompino and it's a reet ballache. The problem is less that the bb is welded in there (although it might be), it's that I cannot get decent purchase with the splined shimano tool I'm using (with an adjustable wrench). The notches in the bb seem quite shallow and it keeps slipping before I can really heave on it.

Any tips for how best to approach this? It seems like I need a way to really clamp the tool on whilst simultaneously being able to turn it.

Can you push on the splined tool and then put a bolt and washer through the hole threading into the bb to hold it in place. Then stand on a large adjustable.

You are trying to turn the right way (just asking).

Use one of the crank bolts to bolt the BB tool in place, clamp the tool in a bench vice then (gently) use the frame as a lever.

Thanks for the suggestions - crank bolts are bolloxed unfortunately, but I'll try something similar with a bolt and washer tomorrow. Need to retire before I do any more damage to it.

There's got to be a way of bolting down the tool to the bb axle. Even if you have to get a shallower tool or a longer bolt and a wide washer. Then dribble some lube down the seat tube, leave overnight in a warm place and get the scaff bar on the adjustable or bench vice it. The most important thing is not to wreck the splines.. The other most important thing is to turn it the right way!

Got it out this morning using a big washer and bolt to tighten the tool down - thks all for the tip. Splines were getting a bit mashed, so glad I asked.
